Introduction to Art History Art 1

The Pyramids are located in Egypt. They are tombs for the Pharaoh. The sphinx has the head of a pharaoh and the body of a lion. It’s main purpose is to guard the pyramids.

The Parthenon is located in Greece. It is a temple to the goddess Athena.

The Coliseum is located in Rome. It was used for entertainment.

The Pantheon is located in Rome. It is a temple to all gods.

Inside the Pantheon The hole on the top of the Dome is called an occulus.

Gothic cathedrals are known for their stained glass and flying buttresses (support Structures that move the weight away from the building. They look like ribs.

During the Renaissance, artists Tried to portray space by using a Horizon line (separates the earth From the sky) and overlapping (placing one object in front of Another by partially covering the Farther object).

Impressionism: A style of art in which artists tried to capture a moment in time. The focus is on light and color.

Abstract art: A style of art that is based on the world around you. The artist will Either exaggerate or simplify these objects to show a different way of looking. This painting is called Brooklyn Bridge.

Non-objective art is focused on the elements of art (line, shape, color, etc). It is Not based on any objects in the world around you.

Unity is a sense of oneness or wholeness. This piece is unified because of the Color palette used and the similar marks used.

Surrealism is a style of art that is dreamlike but is painted realistically.
