1 ARTISTS and their ENVIRONMENTS “Art has been here from very early times. Although art has changed much since then, there are many similarities between ancient and modern artists. Artists from ancient time drew their world as they saw it. They painted objects and events that were important to them and their cultures. Modern artists also respond to their environments. They create art that reflects today’s concerns. “ * World Adventures – Time and Place

2 Cave Paintings ~ (20,000 – 8,000 BC) Renaissance (The 14th century) The term that means rebirth specifically,the rebirth of all things ancient Greek and Roman especially artistic styles. It helped to bring an end to the dark ages!! Two famous artists were ~ Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci

3 Impressionism (19th century art movement) The impressionist style of painting is done by concentrating on the general impression of a scene or an object. Impressionists use unmixed primary colors and small brush strokes to create reflective light. Two famous artists were ~ Claude Monet Edgar Degas Expressionism (Early 20th-century) The expressionist artist replaces the reality of an object with what he/she sees it. It is not important to them that their art is “pretty” or if other people like it as long as THEY like it! Two famous artists were ~ Vincent Van Gogh Edvard Munch

4 Cubism: An early 20th-century school of painting and sculpture in which the subject matter is portrayed by geometric forms without realistic detail. This style emphasized flat, two-dimensional surfaces. A famous artist who followed this style ~ Picasso Surrealism (Late 1910s – Early 1920s): Surrealism the world of dream and fantasy would be joined to the everyday rational world – “surreality.” Salvador Dalí Two famous artists were ~ René Magritte

5 Abstract Expressionists (Early 1940’s): Two basic tendencies of Abstract Expressionism stressed dynamic, energetic gesture and more open fields of color. Jackson Pollock Mark RothkoTwo famous artists were ~ Pop Art (Mid 1950’s - England, Late 1950s - USA) Pop art is one of the major art movements of the 20th century. It is characterized by themes that came from popular culture, such as advertising and comic books. Two famous artists were ~ Roy Lichtenstein Andy Warhol
