Mary Beth Schell Adam Dodd NC AHEC Digital Library National AHEC: Wednesday June 23, 2010 Using Social Networking Tools to Support Graduate Medical Education: A Story of Two AHEC Libraries

Agenda Background What is the NC AHEC Digital Library? What are Collaborative Tools? Example Projects Mountain AHEC’s Family Medicine Residency Program Wiki Southern Regional AHEC Family Medicine Residency Program Blog

NC AHEC Digital Library (ADL): Underlying Assumptions Access to high quality health information is important High quality health information improves the quality of health care Access to health information can be a factor in retaining health professionals in medically underserved areas

ADL: Main Components ADL Portal ( Resources Purchased by/for Consortium Authentication System (linking users to resources & UNC affiliates through Proxy) Collaborative Communities

Hospital Staff Preceptors AHEC Faculty/Staff Medical Residents Individual Paid Members ADL: Users

Key Medical Journals (~70 titles) Journal Collections Nursing & Allied Health (500+ titles) Health Business Journals (150+ titles) Psychology & Behavioral Science (160+ titles) Full-Text Electronic Medical Books (50+ titles) Free Websites (1,000 plus) ADL: Resources

What is a wiki? A wiki site allows authors to edit, delete, or modify the content on the web. A wiki is a website that supports collaboration of work from many different authors. Working with a wiki does not require programming skill or technical knowledge.

Why use a wiki? You want to promote / broadcast information online. You plan on making regular changes to online content. You have people in different places working on the same documents.

You have a well defined audience who can have an ADL account You want to restrict read and/or edit access to your Wiki Note: The ADL Wiki would NOT be good for information to be provided to a broad audience for whom it is difficult to identify specific users When to use the ADL Wiki?

Blogs are usually made up of brief, chronologically arranged, frequently updated posts about a topic. Blog posts are individual entries that allow feedback from readers. Same technology - different application. What is a blog?

To foster discussions among a geographically-dispersed group. To quickly share information about activities, events, and resources. To maintain a record of past discussions that can be easily retrieved. Why use a blog?

Users must have an ADL account Each user must be logged in to access the Blog Ideal for creating a Blog that needs to be secure The ADL blog

Mountain AHEC Family Medicine Resident Rotation Wiki (FM Wiki) Purpose Overview of Residency Program Links to readings/articles Links to program specific information (i.e. Online Grand Rounds) Users The Residents Faculty & Staff Librarian Supporting Project

FM Wiki Details 30 pages (separate page for each rotation) Similar navigation table on each page Librarians maintain the wiki pages External links to library provided content (articles)

FM Wiki: Current Status FM Wiki is migrating to a new platform FM Residency Program Management System Residency Program staff will manage wiki content (except licensed resource access) Licensed resources (articles) will still live on a FM Wiki within the ADL Creating more streamlined mechanism for linking to the articles from the Residency Portal to the ADL

Southern Regional AHEC Family Medicine Residency Grand Rounds Blog (FM Blog) Purpose Provide context-specific answers to clinical questions posed by residents during rotations Users Residents Attending Physicians Library support staff Faculty and Staff

FM Blog Details Residents identify one to three questions (after each round) for which additional information would be useful. The librarian researches the questions and posts the questions and answering citations on a blog. The librarian also includes the search strategy used to find the answer. The attending physician will evaluate the residents’ review of the posted articles, presentation skills, and their ability to apply learned information to patient care. The attending physician will include this component of Practice Based Learning into the residents’ end of rotation evaluation.

Future Planning Wiki 2.0 Users can manage their own content and files. Users can add other users to their workspace(s). Live View Page History Live Notifications File Uploads Comments and Chats
