Isolation In Literature, Media, and Society

Today’s Agenda We are beginning our unit on isolation Group discussion on what isolation is, and what forms it takes. Begin our class reading of Life of Pi Ticket out the door, you will hand me your response journals on your way out. REMEMBER! No writing, no credit!

Instructions Put away laptops and books, or anything that might distract you. Pull out response journals. Get into groups posted below. Group 1Group 2Group 3Group 4 JohnTonyBurtBeth DiannaSteveErnieLogan ClarkNatashaAbbyZach BruceBuckyLucasAaron

Questions Group 1: What do you think isolation is; what does it mean? Group 2: What are some common themes of isolation, and how are they shown? Provide examples from something you have read, seen, or experienced. Group 3: Are there any signs of isolation in today’s society? Group 4: What makes us connected, and not isolated? Discus amongst your group, and be prepared to share some thoughts with the class.

Are We as Isolated as These Tribal People?

After Seeing These Videos, What is Isolation? Also, what are some ways we can be more connected? Take a few minutes and write your response in your Reading Response Journal Share response with people in your group. Write more in your journal if any new ideas come to mind

Literal Isolation

Life of Pi Story about a young teenager who becomes stranded in the Pacific ocean with only a Tiger as a companion. Pull out your copy and read along. If called upon read until new student is called. If you were stranded on a life boat by yourself, with one week of supplies for six people, what would you do to stay busy, and how would you survive? Write your answer down in your journal.

Wrap Up Don’t forget to hand me your journals as you leave the room, no journal, no participation points for today, remember those points add up! Prepare for tomorrow when we work in the computer lab on our research of actual castaways. You can start researching tonight. Read to page 96 in Life of Pi by Friday.
