Happy Monday, March 16 th REMINDER…. THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY no cell phones allowed in class. *Please pick up calculator *Sit down quietly and work on opening task below(WEEK 10) *Copy learning target on next available page in Math Journal SWBAT: I will recognize the geometric relationship between the area of a square and the length of its sides as being the square root. Example: The square root of 49 is 7. The square root of 60 is not a perfect square but I know it is in between the square root of 49 and the square root of 64.

4
*As a whole class, work through the following problems found on the link below. *Students raise your hand when you know the answer. Check your answer with the answer given on the screen. HINT to teacher: You may want to have a student sit at my desk and click the link so you can Help students stay on task by walking around the room. HINTS Work through at least 10 problems. Do not log in!!! http://www.khanacademy.org/math/pre- algebra/exponents-radicals/radical- radicals/e/square_roots

*Students get journals ready to take notes on how to approximate square roots. This is the learning target for the day. *When all students are ready, play the following video. Students, Take notes on anything you find useful or new. *Students, Write down any questions you have about imperfect squares that I can answer for you tomorrow. http://www.khanacademy.org/math/pre- algebra/exponents-radicals/radical- radicals/v/approximating-square-roots

*As a whole class, work through the following problems found on the link below. *Students raise your hand when you know the answer. Check your answer with the answer given on the screen. HINT to teacher: You may want to have a student sit at my desk and click the link so you can Help students stay on task by walking around the room. Work through about 15-20 problems http://www.khanacademy.org/math/pre- algebra/exponents-radicals/radical- radicals/e/square_roots_2

7
*Turn on the lights *Working in pairs *Hand out class work, ESTIMATING SQUARE ROOT ACTIVITY, which is found on my front desk. Each pair of students gets one sheet, do not hand out a sheet to each student or you will run out of copies.

8
These are corrections to the directions on the activity.

9
*Have students work on pairs doing numbers 2-5 ***SKIP THE FIRST STEP*** *Students, you will be placing the number chips on the number line taped to your desk. *You will be deciding where to place each square root from 1-16. (You will not be using post it notes like the direction says, You will instead be using the chips found on your desk). SKIP THE FIRST STEP *This is a partner activity. Work together in your seats To complete the task. Example of what the task should look like on next slide.

11
Answer to chip placement. Have students check their work

12
Answer to question #3. Have students check their work.

13
*When students are done, Have them place chips back into the cups or envelopes so that the next class can use them. *Give students the exit ticket found on my desk. They will need about 3-5 minutes to complete it. It is a private “Quiz like” Exit ticket. Students turn in exit ticket before you exit out the door. All calculators put away and rulers turned in.
