PLATFORM UTILITIES PAB 2073 Reference: PCSB/PMO document

Firewater system Instrument air system Starting air system Seawater and potable water system Electric power generation

Firewater System Platform are equipped with extensive fire fighting facilities to extinguish and control spread and damage of fires Main components Firewater pumps Firewater ring main Firewater deluge system

Platform may have minimum 2 FWPs to provide high-pressure water to FW rings and FW deluge systems FW Pumps Located 20 feet below sea level Multi-stage submersible centrifugal pumps Their shafts hung-off in a caisson Use liquid fuel for its engine Set to turn on when fire alarm sounded or when pressure in firewater ring main drops below certain pressure

Firewater delivery classified in 2 ways Fixed Active Fixed – FW deluge system for each module and sprinkler for LQ Active – FW ring main and associated FW monitors, hose reels, light water station

FW deluge system Deluge - ‘ to wash’, ‘to flood’ Deluge system supplies water to cool equipment in event of fire Modules with high electrical equipment and low inventory of fuel usually do not have deluge System has a valve tied to FW pump discharge, main line to the module and a distribution system around the module with nozzles directed to specific equipment

Sprinkler in LQ Sprinkler system in event of fire in living quarters Consists of Line from FWP discharge pipings throughout the LQ nozzles that open when fusible plug melts System to charge and flush with water

INSTRUMENT AIR SYSTEM Instrument air system provides air for all pneumatic controls Valve actuators Service air for tools, air motors, and starters The system consists of Air compressors Air storage /receiver Air dryers Piping system

Air receiver/Storage vessel Air compressors Takes atmospheric air, filter it, compress it, cool it and deliver it to instrument/service air receiver Have 2 units, one operating, one standby Air receiver/Storage vessel Stores compressed air to provide additional capacity when required

Air Dryers Distribution pipings Removes water vapour from air as it can clog the small orifices in instruments Has 2 vessels containing silica gel (dry desiccant) Air will flow into one vessel, after certain pressure the vessel is closed and the desiccant is regenerated (dried) while air flows into the other vessel Distribution pipings Runs throughout entire platform

STARTING AIR SYSTEM Supply air to start motors on generators and diesel engines Has pair of air compressors, vessel for air storage (receiver), distribution piping system No need dryer Not continuously used – only in utilities, power generation modules and cranes

SEAWATER AND POTABLE WATER SYSTEM Seawater is used for many purposes: Heating, Ventilation and Air-conditioning (HVAC) Living Quarters kitchen and toilets Firewater ring main pressurisation facility Water injection Drilling facilities Sand jetting system Sewage treatment

Potable means drinkable Seawater treated using chemicals or methods such as reverse-osmosis Supplies fresh water to LQ for drinking, washing, showers, cooking Provides water for emergency uses such as eyewash, shower stations (washdown facilities)

Components of seawater and potable water supply system Seawater lift pumps Watermakers to convert seawater into potable water Water storage tanks and pumps UV sterilizer to kill bacteria Distribution pipings

ELECTRIC POWER GENERATION Electric power is generated on all platforms Power generated at 50 – 60 Hz, 480 V up to 4160 V depending on the size of motors requiring the voltage Use step down transformers to provide power to equipment at lower voltages

Power from electric generators run to a central control/switchgear room tied to motor control center (MCC) panels/central power distribution panels Panels provide electric power to individual pieces of equipment such as Electric motors for pumps, fans, air compressors Air conditioning, lighting, battery charging Electronic controls and communication equipment
