Unit 5 The Light of Halloween

Paragraph 1 On Halloween, houses and yards in the U.S.A. are often lit up by jack-o’-lanterns.  …are often lit up by jack-o’- lanterns. be lit up為「現在被動式」用法

► fifteen minutes/six days/four weeks ago Paragraph2  Long ago, a man named Jack…  long ago 很久以前 「 一段時間+ ago 」,意為「…以前」 ► fifteen minutes/six days/four weeks ago ► a moment/a minute/a short while ago

 …a man named Jack…   …a man called Jack…   …a man who was named/called Jack   …a man whose name was Jack wonder (猜想 ) wander ( 徘徊 )

Feeling sad and miserable, Jack picked up the coal with a turnip. As Jack felt sad and miserable, he picked up the coal with a turnip. with a turnip

 make A out of B (用B製成A) ► Mother made a bag out of the jeans I was going to throw away. 此用法若使用被動語態,通常會省 略out。例: ► The beautiful chair was made of wood.

字 詞 辨 義 ► Cheese is made from milk. (化學變化; 本質由牛奶變化為乳酪) ► Amy made a vase out of an old bottle. (物理變化; 只有外形的變化)

 With the lantern, Jack wandered… As Jack carried the lantern, Jack wandered…   Carrying the lantern, Jack wandered with在這裡作「拿著,持有」的意思。

Paragraph 8  the Irish 愛爾蘭人 the Irish為集合名詞, 作句中的主詞 時需搭配複數動詞。 ► The Irish are famous for their jokes, coffee, and tap dance.

 They symbolized Jack’s miserable soul and were used to scare wandering ghosts away. 人 be used to + N (V-ing) ( 習慣 ) I am used to hot weather. 事物 be used to + V (被用來 ) The lanterns were used to scare ghosts away.

They found pumpkins and used them to replace the turnips. They replaced the turnips with pumpkins. They had used the turnips for their jack-o’-lanterns.
