A student, Carol, is going to go to a college interview. She is asking one of her teachers, Mr. Lin, for some advice about how to prepare for the interview and how to make a good first impression at it. (C = Carol, L = Mr. Lin) Conversation

C: Excuse me, Mr. Lin. I’m going to my college interview next Monday. Could you give me some tips on how to make a good first impression? L: Well, first, of course, you need to dress formally and greet the professors politely. Then, be sure to answer their questions in a clear voice and look at the person who has asked you the question.

C: Is there any way I can prepare for the questions I might be asked? L: Review your SOP carefully before you go, and practice answering some questions you think the professors might ask. You can also have a friend or family member ask you some questions, too.

C: I think I can do all that. L: In addition, you should find out some information about the college. This will help you explain why you want to attend this school and why you would be suitable for studying there.

C: Anything else I should do? L: You should think of some good questions about the program you are interested in, because the professors will probably ask if you have any questions at the end of the interview.

C: I’m afraid that I might appear very nervous. Do you have any advice on what I can do about that? L: Don’t worry. Most people are nervous before and during interviews. You’ll be less nervous and may even enjoy the interview if you follow the two “Ps.” C: The two “Ps”? L: “Prepare and Practice.” If you remember these two things, then the interview should go well. Good luck!
