TRAIT THEORIES Earliest theories can be traced back to ancient Greeks and Romans Great Person Theory An individual is born either with or without necessary traits for leadership

Recent & Realistic Approach Leadership traits are not completely inborn They can be acquired through learning

Personality Traits Trustworthiness: Group expects honesty, integrity & credibility Honesty & trust make a difference in effectiveness Leader must generate and sustain trust TRUST

Personality Traits Self Confidence : (Yes ! I can do it) Refers to behaviour shown Important trait in all leadership settings Self assured leaders bring confidence in team members They are cool under pressure They remain calm during crises

Personality Traits Dominance: Dominant person imposes his will on others Dominant leader is often bossy They try to be a leader among gatherings and take control of discussion.

Personality Traits Extroversion : Person who likes to spend time with other people rather than keeping unfriendly. It increases the leadership effectiveness They want to assume a leadership role and participate in group activities

Personality Traits Assertiveness: Refers to being straightforward in expressing demands, opinions, feelings & attitudes.

Personality Traits Emotional Stability : Controls on emotions Group members expect emotionally stable leader Low emotional stability is associated with depression, anger, embarrassment, worry

Sense of Humour : Effective use of humour is important part of leaders role Relieves tension and boredom Humour should be in this way that no body is targeted. Personality Traits

Enthusiasm : Enthusiasm is directly linked to passion. You have to find your passion in order to feel the enthusiasm from within your own self. Great tool for motivating others Can be expressed both verbally & non verbally Personality Traits

Leadership Motives The Power Motive Effective leaders have a strong need to control resources. The power motive is very important to influence others through power. Two Types: 1.Personalized Power Motive: Leaders want power for their personal interest. 2.Socialized Power Motive: Leader uses power to help others.

Leadership Motives Drive and Achievement Motive Leaders having goals, put their full energy in order to achieve these goals. They use strong efforts in order to fulfil their motive. They find joy in accomplishment.

Leadership Motives Strong Work Ethics Leaders belief in dignity of work. They value hard work not to work hard clashes with their values. Mostly leaders prefer teamwork

Leadership Motives Tenacity (Stubbornness, Firmness, Persistence) Leaders are better at overcoming problems. Tenacity is important because organization makes long term plans and to fulfil these plans tenacity is needed.
