Bike MS Team Safety Presentation 2015 Bay to Bay Bike MS Tour

Bike MS Safety Rules Bike MS Safety Rules Bike MS follows all California Vehicle/Bike Code laws and include the following rules: 1.Wear a helmet – NO EXCEPTIONS! 2.No headphones or ear buds allowed. 3.Obey all traffic signs and signals. 4.Pass only on the left. 5.Never ride more than 2 abreast so that cars and other cyclists can pass safely. 6.Use hand signals when slowing, stopping or turning. 7.Always cycle with traffic.

Rider Responsibilities »Always ride as far right as safely possible. This will allow faster riders to safely pass you on the left without going into the traffic lane. »Pedestrians always have the right of way. »When passing parked cars, watch for car doors swinging open. Warn riders behind you if notice movement in parked cars.

Group Riding Techniques »Communicate (use voice and hand signals) »Provide a “head’s up” for the riders behind you “Slowing”“Stopping” “Glass” “On Your Left”“Pothole” “Gravel” “Tracks”“Sand” “Runner Up”

Group Riding Techniques Cont’d »Ride to the Right (fast riders will pass on the left) »Keep your head up, look down the road past the rider in front of you »Maintain a steady speed and predictable line »Do not ride too close to other riders and never overlap your front wheel with the rear wheel of the rider in front of you »Adjust your safety zone to the current road conditions

Riding in Roundabout »Take control of the traffic lane EARLY »Behave EXACTLY like a motor vehicle »DO NOT squeeze to the right edge of the lane »Use the full lane throughout the roundabout

Riding in Wet Weather While we hope that sunny California stays that way, we will ride the Tour rain or shine! »Braking – leave more space »Slick Surfaces – when turning, avoid painted areas & metal road covers »Expect more flat tires

Assistance on the Route »Rest Stops have Bike Mechanics & Medical support »Ride Marshals on the route. They can assist with flat tires, minor repairs, and call for medical or SAG support if needed »SAG vehicles & motorcycles »Take off your helmet when in need of assistance

Hot Spots »Bike trail into Trestles – Ride slowly & watch for pedestrian traffic with surfboards and dogs »San Onofre Campground – 15mph limit & stay to the right. Watch for pedestrians and parking vehicles SINGLE FILE riding on the base »Camp Pendleton – The Marines require SINGLE FILE riding on the base »Train tracks – cross at right angle
