1 Performing Basic Vehicle Maneuvers
Chapter 4 Performing Basic Vehicle Maneuvers

2 Steering, Signaling, and Changing Lanes
Steering Forward - Over steer To correct, try not to make large adjustments. Understeer To correct, adjust your path of travel more frequently. Steering forward -Oversteering – Corrections are too large. -Understeering – Corrections are too small.

3 Steering Straight Backward
1. Step on brake and shift to Reverse. 2. Left hand at 12 o’clock. 3. Look through back window glance at mirrors. 4. Control speed with brake. 5. Minor steering adjustments. 6. Continue looking back until stopped. 6 items

4 Signaling Signal when you: 1. Turn 2. Change Lanes 3. Slow Down
4. Stop 5. Pull to or from the curb Items 1-5

5 Appropriate Hand Signals

6 Changing Lanes Check front zones M – Check mirrors.
I - Indicate direction; Signal B – Check blind spot; look over shoulder. Or SMOG – signal, mirrors, over the shoulder, GO!

7 Changing Lanes Use MIB steps for lane changes and when you pull to the curb or from the curb.

8 Check for Understanding #1
What are the 4 steps for lane changing? When should you be using lane changing procedures?

9 Making Turns and Turning the Vehicle Around

10 Reference Points Reference point is some part of the vehicle that is used to judge position. Standard reference point is the point on a vehicle that is used by most drivers (ex. hood ornament) to judge position. Personal Reference point is an adaptation of a standard reference point for one’s own vehicle. 3 items

11 Making a Right Turn Signal 100 ft. from turn. Slow down early.
Check L – R - L. Make turn at 10 mph. Line up front bumper even with curb and yourself with crosswalk. Look through turn. Accelerate at end of turn.

12 Making a Left Turn Signal 100 ft. from turn. Slow down early.
Check L – R - L. Make turn at 10 mph. Line up front bumper even with lane you are turning into and your body with curb. Look through turn. Accelerate at end of turn.

13 Check for Understanding #2
What reference points are you looking for when you approach a right turn? What reference points are you looking for when you approach a left turn?

14 Turnabouts Precautions: 1. Is it legal? 2. 500 ft visibility.
3. Don’t do near hills or curves. 4. Don’t do in heavy/high speed traffic. 5. Check zones for other roadway users. Items 1-5

15 Turnabouts 5 types: 1. Back into driveway/alley on right side.
2. Pull into driveway/alley on left side. 3. Pull into driveway/alley on right side. 4. 3 pt turn/Y-turn. 5. Mid-block U-turn. Items 1-5

16 Backing Into Drive on Right Side
Pull up past drive and stop and signal right. Switch to reverse and back into driveway past the sidewalk and stop. Switch to drive, signal left and stop at the side walk, check L-R-L. Pull up to the edge of the street and check L-R-L again. Turn left onto street into proper lane. Safest Turnabout to do. Pulling forward into traffic.

17 Pulling Into Drive on Left Side
Pull forward into drive on left and come to stop when past sidewalk. Shift to reverse, signal right, and back up. Stop before sidewalk and check L-R-L. Back up and stop before street and check L-R-L again. Back out into nearest lane and stop. Shift to drive and pull forward. Next Safest to do. Backing only across one lane.

18 Pulling Forward Into Drive on Right Side
Pull forward into drive on right and stop when past the sidewalk. Switch to reverse, signal left, and back straight Stop before sidewalk and check L-R-L. Back and stop before street to check L-R-L again. Back out into far lane by making left turn. Stop when completely in your lane, switch to drive and pull forward. Not as safe as first tow because you have to back across two lanes.

19 3 Point Turn/Y-Turn Turnabout
Signal and pull over to curb. Turn wheel sharp left and pull across both lanes until perpendicular to curb and stop. Shift to reverse and back across both lanes while turning your wheel right and stop before curb. Shift to drive, check for traffic, and pull forward turning wheel left to center yourself in proper lane. Not very safe because you have to cross two lanes pulling forward then stop then cross the two lanes again and stop and then cross the two lanes again. Should only be used on low traffic roads such as a dead end street.

20 Mid-Block U-Turn Need very wide road to do this maneuver.
Check MIB and turn wheel left when clear of traffic in both directions. Continue turn until you are facing opposite direction and then continue forward in your new direction. Least safe of the turnabouts and illegal in most places, especially intersections.

21 Check for Understanding #3
How do you perform a: Turnabout using a driveway on the left side of the street? Turnabout using a driveway on the right side of the street? (hint - 2 ways) 3-point turnabout? Mid-block U-turn? Which is the safest to do? Why?

22 Parking When parking consider the following: Ample room to park
Avoid spaces at end of lanes or near large vehicles that restrict your view Avoid spaces with poorly parked vehicles on either side Use reference points when parking. 4 items and illustration

23 Angle Parking Check front zones and signal.
Flash your brake lights and check blind spot. Slow and begin turn when you see down center of space. Straighten wheels as you pull in to center vehicle and pull completely into space. 4items and illustration

24 Perpendicular Parking
1. Stay wide of intended parking space. 2. Check front zones and signal. 3. Flash your brake lights and check blind spot. 4. Line up front bumper with first line of space you are pulling into and start turn. 5. Straighten wheels as you pull in to center vehicle and pull completely into space. A B 5 items and illustration

25 Leaving an Angle or Perpendicular Parking Space
While looking back for vehicles, pedestrians, etc. you should: 1. Creep slowly back controlling speed with brake. 2. Start turn when you are half-way out of the space in intended direction. 3. Back into nearest lane and stop with wheels straight. Shift to drive, scan all zones, and proceed if safe to do so. Items 1-3

26 Parallel Parking A B 1. Signal right as you pull up to car in front of space. 2. Shift to reverse, cover brake and ease back slowly. 3. Turn sharp right when your rear seat is even with other car’s rear bumper. Continue moving back slowly. 4. Turn sharp left when your passenger side mirror is even with the other car’s bumper. Continue moving back slowly. 5. Check front to make sure it is clear, then look back until finished. 6. When parallel to curb, shift to drive to straighten wheels then stop.

27 Parallel Parking Is this car parked legally?
No it is not. It is not legal to park facing the opposite direction of the flow of traffic in Illinois. Photo and Q/A

28 Check for Understanding #4
What reference points are you looking for when performing a(n): Angle park? Perpendicular Park? Parallel Park?

29 Uphill Parking With a Curb = “Up, up, and away”
Without a Curb = Turn Wheel Right With Curb: (“Up, Up, and Away”) Pull to curb. 2. Foot on brake, shift to N. 3. Turn wheel away from curb (left). 4. Ease off brake and gently roll back until front tire touches curb. 5. Shift to P and set parking brake. 6. To pull away: Release parking brake, shift to D, check mirrors, indicate direction, check blind spot, and pull away if clear. Without Curb: 1. Pull as far off road as possible. 2. Foot on brake, turn wheel towards edge of road. 3. Shift to P and set parking brake. 4. To pull away: Release parking brake, shift to N, ease off brake so car gently starts to roll and turn wheel left one full turn, shift to D, check mirrors, indicate direction, check blind spot, pull away when clear.

30 Downhill Parking With a Curb = “Down, Right, Dirty”
Without a Curb = “Down, Right, Dirty” With curb: (“Down, Right, Dirty”) 1. Pull to curb. 2. Foot on brake and shift to N. 3. Turn wheel towards curb (right). 4. Ease off brake and gently roll forward until front tire touches curb. 5. Shift to P and set parking brake. To pull away: Release parking brake, shift to R, ease off curb and turn wheel one turn left, shift to D, check mirrors, indicate direction, check blind spot, pull away when safe. Without curb: 1. Pull to edge of road. 2. Foot on brake, turn wheel towards curb (right). 3. Shift to P and set parking brake.

31 Check for Understanding #5
What part of the car do you want to touch the curb when performing a hill park? When performing an uphill park where do you want your car to roll if: There is no curb? There is a curb? When performing a downhill park, where do you want your car to roll if:

32 I hope you remember to study for your quiz!
The End Quiz is tomorrow.
