Chapter One – License Classifications Class 5 – 16 years old regular cars, trucks, mopeds Class 4 – 18 years old Small buses, taxi, ambulance, regular cars Class 3 – 18 years old 3 or more axles (big rigs, buses) Class 2 – 18 years old Any bus, classes 3, 4, 5 Class 1 – 18 years old ANYTHING except a motorcycle Class 7 – 15 years old – learner’s license Class 6 – 16 years old motorcycle

4. Chapter Three Starting Your Vehicle Do a walk around Adjust seats, mirrors, head restraint and seatbelt. Hands on steering wheel at 9 0’clock and 3 0’clock Parking on hills – wheels turned to the left uphill with curb, to the right without curb…to the right downhill Park 5m away from a stop sign, 3m away from a fire hydrant and 6m from a crosswalk

5. Chapter Four – Intersections and Turns Stop before marked (painted) crosswalks When in doubt at an intersection…STOP! Four-way stops…first there goes. Yield to those on your right if they get there at the same time as you. YIELD – slow down at an intersection with a yield sign. Stop to let cars proceed, then go when it’s safe. At an uncontrolled intersection yield to cars on your right, or yield to cars passing through if you are turning. SIGNAL when you are changing lanes, turning, moving from the curb. Know your hand signals! Do U-Turns only when it’s safe… not on hills, in intersections, in busy steets.

Chapter Five – Lane Driving Use the shoulder of the road for emergency stops Use a shoulder check to see your blindspot before changing lanes When passing, pass on the left side Make sure that passing is allowed and safe before you attempt it Merging and exiting onto or off of highways – be safe, use appropriate speeds, and NEVER back up DO NOT PASS on corners, curves, or up hills

7. Chapter Six – Handling Emergency Situations Do not try to repair your car on narrow or fast- moving highways If brakes fail, try to swerve off the road, or put the car in neutral or apply the e-brake. If you get a flat tire, take foot off the gas, keep hands on steering wheel, steer off the road onto the shoulder Headlight failure – turn on your hazard lights If skidding, take foot off of the gas and turn your wheels in the direction you want your car to go Use low-beam headlights in fog and snow

8. Chapter Seven – The Responsible Driver DRIVE DEFENSIVELY! Give yourself lots of space between other cars, both driving and at a red light Follow the two-second rule…you should be two seconds behind any car in front of you DO NOT DRIVE IF SLEEPY DO NOT USE CELL PHONES, IPODS, etc. when driving If babies/toddlers are in the car be sure to have the proper seats/restraints

9. Chapter Eight – Sharing the Road Stop for pedestrians Watch for cyclists Give room to bicycles and motorbikes Make space in between cars at red lights to allow for rollbacks ALWAYS stop for school busses (give them 20 metres) Pull over to the right and stop to let emergency vehicles pass DO NOT TRY TO BEAT A TRAIN Follow the directions on the pavement Don’t be a jerk and try to outrun a funeral procession

10. Chapter Nine – Driving Within the Law Don’t speed No drinking and driving Always use your seatbelt Do not drive without a license No cell phones/texting No drugs and driving Put carseats in the correct way Do not drive without proper insurance
