Baptism By: Jake Cavanaugh, Sam Maselli, Conor Porth, Mike Standen, and Montess Trapp

In Baptism we receive new life in Christ The Sacrament of Baptism is our rebirth in water and spirit In Baptism the water symbolizes that we die to sin and rise to new life in Christ Baptism is necessary for salvation Both original sin and personal sin are taken away when you are baptized

We are washed and anointed At the time of Jesus, Jewish people washed themselves in water to prepare for a sacred time or event John the Baptist encouraged people to participate in this ritual, by baptizing them in the Jordan River This anointing of Christ by the Holy Spirit was a sign that Jesus Christ is the Messiah Jesus calls us to share in the priesthood, the priesthood of the faithful

At Baptism we are welcomed into the Church Baptism is the very first sacrament that we celebrate, it leads us to the other two Sacraments of Christian Initiation, Confirmation and Eucharist The Church has initiated adults, they are welcomed to prepare for and celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation in a process of formation called the catechumenate Those who join the catechumenate are called catechumens The celebrant is the bishop, priest, or deacon who celebrates the sacrament

We celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism in five steps 1.) Reception of the Children In this the celebrant asks for the names of the children and what the parents see in the Church They respond, Baptism, and they are reminded to teach the children about the Church Then the celebrant says, “ I claim you for Christ our savior by the sign of the cross” and makes the sign of the cross on the child’s forehead.

Liturgy of the Word This is when the celebrant reads from the scripture A song follows this

Celebration of the Sacrament the celebrant then blesses the water The celebrant asks questions to the parents/ godparents Then the celebrant baptizes the child/ children

Explanatory Rites Anoints child/ children with chrism Gives child/ children white garment

Conclusion Rite Prays the Lord’s Prayer Offers final blessing Dismisses the crowd with “Go in peace. Thanks be to God.

Extraordinary circumstances A bishop, priest, deacon is the ordinary minister of baptism In death anyone can baptize A person baptizes by pouring water over someone's head and saying “I baptize you in the name of the father and the son and the holy spirit”

The Catechumenate To become a catholic a person has to contact the church and taking a step toward becoming a catholic The word catechumen means in ancient time Catechumens grow in their understanding of the Christian life in important ways They do not participate in the liturgy of the Eucharist
