2 Test Outline What does solidarity mean? What is discernment?
What is the story of Pentecost? What is the Trinity? Know all 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit. Match definitions/examples to the appropriate gift Provide your own examples of how to develop each DO NOT memorize the fruits However, be able to provide examples from your life for them.

3 Sacrament Sacraments are highly symbolic. They were all instituted by Christ himself. Sacraments “do” what they symbolize Ex: Baptism symbolizes the soul being cleanses of original sin. Which is what God is making happen.

4 Sacrament An outward sign and/or action representing God’s love and saving grace. Sacraments are living encounters with God. In a broad sense, any person/event/thing through which you experience God’s presence in a new or deeper way could be called a sacrament.

5 7 Sacraments There are 7 important events that the church celebrates. They are divided into three different types … Sacraments of Initiation Sacraments of Service Sacraments of Healing

6 Sacraments of Initiation #1
Baptism Washes away original sin which was committed by Adam and Eve. Also, your first initiation into the Catholic faith.

7 Sacrament of Initiation #1
Christ has called his death and resurrection a baptism. Baptism is usually initiated by parents on behalf of their child. Godparents are chosen to help raise the child in the Catholic faith. Baptisimal promises are made by parents and Godparents for us.

8 Sacrament of Initiation #2
Eucharist (Communion) When we take part in the Eucharist, we do three important things. Celebrate God’s love and faithfulness Offer all that we are to God Commit ourselves to be at peace. Recall: Transubstantiation, consecration

10 Sacrament of Initiation #3
Confirmation When you are accepted into the Catholic faith as an adult. The Holy Spirit comes to strengthen the gifts you received at Baptism Performed by the Bishop.

11 Sacrament of Initiation #3
When you are confirmed, you are saying that you fully understand the responsibility of being a Christian, and that you accept Christ and his teachings. The word confirmation means strengthening The person being confirmed chooses a sponsor, someone who will help them in their journey through the faith.

12 Confirmation Procedure
#1. Laying on of the Hands The bishop asks the Holy Spirit to enter into that person.

13 Confirmation Procedure
#2: Annointing with oil The candidate’s forehead is blessed with the sign of the cross. A special oil called “chrism”. It is a symbol of strength.

14 Confirmation Procedure
#3: A sponsor places a hand on the shoulder #4: The bishop administers the sacrament

15 Symbols of Initation Water – Symbol of baptism, sign of cleansing and rebirth White garment – Symbol of baptism, means the person is “clothed in Christ” Light – Baptism, sign that Christ brings light to that person’s life Laying on of the Hands – Sign of the gift of the Holy Spirit Oil – Sign of strength, beauty, health, and healing Bread and Wine – Sign of our thanks and of our wish to offer ourselves to God.

16 Sacrament of Healing #1 Reconciliation
The priest offers Jesus’ forgiveness to those who have sinned and repented The point is to heal the relationship Sign of hope and wholeness

17 Sacrament of Healing #2 Anointing of the Sick
Offered to all those who are seriously sick to help heal them of things that hurt “on the inside” when they suffer Helps sick people find God in their suffering “Oil of chrism”.

18 Sacrament of Service #1 Marriage
A man and woman make a covenant (a lifelong commitment) Brings together a man and a woman as “one flesh” Ring: No beginning, no end, just like God’s love Married love is meant to last forever and be faithful. It is a sacred vocation of Christ.

19 Sacrament of Service #2 Holy Orders
Establishes priests, deacons and bishops as legitimate leaders within the church The emphasis is on dedicated, faithful service

21 Love True love is … Self giving. We care about the other person as much as or more than we do about ourselves Faithful. We show our care for others even when it is inconvenient or when there is something else we’d rather do. Unconditional. We care about them and want what is best for them no matter what.
