Lessons Learnt and Experience Sharing 2 Presented By Rabia Mehfooz Assistant Director (Engineering) WASA Multan

Contents During last one year, what Lessons we have Learnt??? Experiences sharing 3

Lessons Learnt The WASA Multan was fully unaware with What is environment and how is it managed? What is Punjab Environmental Protection Act 1997 (Amended 2012)? What are the requirements of the act? 4

Lessons Learnt Lack of Integration of environmental concern into Planning and design of schemes Frequent complaints from the community for mismanagement of various environmental as well as social issues. 5

Why Environment???? Before this project, environment was considered just plantation We were not aware about Health and Safety requirements. We were not familiar with Environmental Assessment We never involved community in development schemes 6

Before PCGIP (Construction of a disposal station) 7

There is no environmental management. There is no protection of labor regarding their safety. Haphazard construction activities No demarcation of area of construction Unsafe work platforms 8

Unsafe working plateform 9

Development schemes without environmental management???  The contractors used to leave the site in untidy condition.  Lack of proper waste management system  Lack of Health and Safety concerns for labor  Lack of communication between own deptt.  There was no mechanism to address the issues of local community 10

Issues before PCGIP Dust at site Haphazard dumping of waste material No protection for labor Frequent community complaints No traffic management 11

Lessons Learnt Environmental consideration precede in planning and design of a scheme Community is taken into confidence prior to the construction of a scheme Traffic management plan is ensured to minimize disruption of traffic Dust suppression to avoid environmental as well as public health issues 12
