Franz and The Count of Monte Cristo go to St. Sebastian’s catacombs The Count of Monte Cristo approaches Luigi Vampa- about 20 other bandits are there and armed Luigi Vampa tells his men to put down their weapons It is clear through the dialogue that The Count of Monte Cristo and Vampa know each other Albert was sleeping calmly…the bandits gave him a cloak to sleep on…shows he is not worried about the situation (remember he is supposed to die of the ransom is not paid in full) Albert turns to the Count of Monte Cristo as a hero-eternally obliged The next day, Albert pays The Count of Monte Cristo a visit to thank him once more Albert invites him to meet his family (The Count of Monte Cristo expected this) The Count of Monte Cristo asks Albert to show him Paris and introduce him to the society The Count of Monte Cristo agrees to meet Albert at his family home…in 3 months (May 21) Franz admits to Albert that the Count of Monte Cristo is a strange man and he feels uneasy about Albert meeting up with him again

Albert is planning on marrying Eugenie Danglars (Danglars’ daughter) The Count says he does not know Baron Danglars personally but has an account open in his bank (Thomson and French) Max reveals that Thomson and French denied having any part in the loan extension and financial assistance given to his father Max informs the Count of Monte Cristo that his sister is happily married to Emanuel-he remained faithful to Julie in bad fortune The Count of Monte Cristo decided to buy his own house in Paris…Champs-Elysees

The Count of Monte Cristo strategically meets and builds relationships with every powerful name in Paris’ high society…especially the wives…Baroness Danglars and Madam Villefort He visited Madam Villefort and her young som, Edward, fainted, so the Coutnt of Monte Cristo revived him with a medication They discussed how remedies can be poison such as one drop could restore someone and 5/6 drops could kill someone and The Count of Monte Cristo noticed how interested Madam Villefort was about this concept The Count of Monte Cristo went to visit the Morrel family The household was very happy Morrel (Max’s and Julie’s father) died already Max tells the extravagant tale about how they overcame their suffering because an “angel” became their benefactor/provided them financial needs (Englishman) Max shows him the red, silk purse, the diamond, and the letter They believed it was a miracle…the last words that Morrel spoke were “It was Edmond Dantes” This makes the Count of Monte Cristo pale…he hasn’t heard that name in a long time and he does not want it to be repeated or else his identitiy could be revealed He leaves immediately which seems strange to the Morrels but Max believes the Count is good hearted The chapter ends with Julie stating that she believes she has heard the Count of Monte Cristo’s voice before
