Title Your Notes: MAPS! Bullet what you think are the critical elements of a map.. Look at the world maps at the front of the book (S23-S24). Find Europe. Compare that to the Europe map p Specifically look at Norway, Sweden and Finland on both maps. Make an observation about the similarities or differences between the two maps based on those three countries.

All about maps….. 1. What is the study of maps and map making? Cartography…. So that would make a person who makes maps a…. Cartographer!

Modern cartographers use computers to make accurate maps for a variety of purposes. Technology used for this is a geographic information system or GIS. p. 21 Another technology commonly used is GPS or global positioning system.

Let’s review a few things you might already know.. #1Golden Rule: The only perfect map is a globe! 2.Imaginary lines circle the globe in east-west and north- south directions. This is called a grid system 3.East-West lines that measure distance from the Prime Meridian are 4.These lines are also called 5. The is drawn from the North Pole through Greenwich, England, to the South Pole. 3.North-South lines that measure distance from the equator are 3.These lines are called because they are parallel to the equator, which his half way between the poles. Longitude! meridians! Prime Meridian latitude! parallels

Parallels and meridians are measured in degrees. Degrees are further divided into minutes. There are sixty minutes In a degree. Here is an example: Use map S25-S26 Absolute location. What is located At approximately 90’W and 30’N? (Why W and why N?)

A book of maps is called an ATLAS!

Map Elements: *distance scale *directional indicator or compass rose *key or legend *title

We will watch this clip twice. YouTube - West Wing - Why are we changing maps? *The first time just watch and listen. *The second time, take notes. What did you learn about map projections, what questions do you have? What can we learn from an episode of West Wing?

What four things get distorted on a flat map?? (2 D’s, 2 S’s)

1.Why are there different map projections? 2.What happens to flat maps? 3.Why should we know this? 4.How are map projections created?? What kind are there? p Let’s review!

Obviously from today’s lesson we have identified two types of projections… what are they? There are actually many more. Your homework is to do a quick internet search to come up with at least five different types of map projections. What does each map get correct, what does it distort? What is it’s purpose? Due Friday….. If you do not have internet access, please use the library or my room for tutorials.
