Petrarch Italian writer who warned against ignoring history. Known as “The Father of Humanism” His ideas affected education—made history important. Petrarch was also a well-known poet of the Renaissance.

Johann Gutenberg Developed a printing press that used movable type. From Germany Printed the Bible in Latin and many other languages--- English, French, Spanish, Italian, German (Vernacular Languages)----Gutenberg Bible More people were learning to read. Gutenberg and the Printing Press Video

Christian Humanism As humanism spread into northern Europe, it took on a more religious form. Scholars there focused on the history of Christianity, not Greece and Rome. It is a blend of humanist and religious ideas.

Desiderius Erasmus Dutch priest who openly criticized the Catholic Church. He criticized corrupt clergy and wanted to get rid of rituals that he considered meaningless. Instead of rituals, he emphasized devotion to God and the teachings of Jesus.

Albrecht Durer German artist Studied anatomy so that he could paint people more realistically. Showed objects in great detail. Famous for his woodblock prints---(copies of original art)---people could understand his books just by looking at the artwork.

Miguel de Cervantes Spanish writer Wrote Don Quixote—poked fun at the romantic tales of the Middle Ages.

William Shakespeare Considered to be the greatest writer in the English language. Most famous for his plays---wrote more than 30 comedies, tragedies, and histories. Invented common phrases and over 2,000 words still used today. Ex. Fair play; lonely

What did you learn about the roles of girls and women during this time period? Noble families in Italy educated their daughters at home. Many women married nobles from other parts of Europe and became influential. They used their positions to encourage the spread of Renaissance ideas in the lands their husbands ruled.
