3 Northern Renaissance Ideas of the Italian Renaissance moved North – Via trade from Italy North – Via students travelling to Italy and taking ideas back home. Mixture of artistic and philosophical ideas of Italy with religious tradition of the North. Artistic focus on realism with traditional religious themes.

6 Artistic Ideas Spread North Artists and students who studied in Italy travelled back to home land. Germany – Albrecht Durer – Artist who specialized in very religious, realistic woodcuts. Flanders – Jan Van Eyck – Artist who perfected super realistic oil painting technique. - Pieter Brueghel – Specialized in painting regular people in everyday life.

9 Northern Writers Try to Reform Society Christian Humanists – Studied Greco-Roman philosophy with Christian theology. – Tried to fix church corruption – Attempted to improve education system – Helped to fix poverty and greed Women’s Reforms – Writers debated the value and role of women in society. Christine de Pizan – Believed women were entirely equal to men and deserved equal education.

14 The Elizabethan Age Renaissance spread to England in mid 1500s. English Renaissance known as the Elizabethan Age. – Named after Queen Elizabeth William Shakespeare – Greatest playwright of all time. Shakespeare loved the classics and used stories from Ancient Greece and Rome often. His plays concentrated on human achievement and human flaws.

17 Impact of the Printing Press Printing Press was most revolutionary invention of the Renaissance era. Moveable Type – Tiny blocks (stamps) could be moved in and out with different letters and symbols. Johann Gutenberg – German Printer – Printed and reproduced the complete Bible. Combined with the use of vernacular writing, ideas spread faster than ever before. – 50 years from Gutenberg Bible 20 million books produced – More than all of prior history combined.
