Students will learn about important people from the Northern Renaissance including Gutenberg and Shakespeare. 3 8. Johann Gutenberg: (1400-1468) German inventor of the moveable-type printing press. Ideas spread much faster. After the Black Death, there were fewer monks around to copy books so the printing press

4 9. Printing Press: Invention that allowed faster copying & printing of words & pictures; helped spread Renaissance ideas much faster than they could before press

5 10. Christian Humanism A combination of Christian and Humanist ideas. Studied the history of Christianity (not Greece and Rome). Desiderius Erasmus  wrote a book criticizing some Church practices. Called for Church reform.

6 11. Realism Style of art that attempts to make things look like they would in real life. In the Northern Renaissance people were painted to look real with physical flaws. They painted scenes from daily life.

7 12. William Shakespeare: (1564-1615) One of the greatest English writers of the Renaissance. Comedies & tragedies about human emotions (humanism). Wrote Romeo and Juliet.
