5 W’s of European Exploration WHEN did exploration occur? -1001- Leif Erikson and the Vikings were the first Europeans to arrive in the New World. -1400’s- Portuguese sailors discover new routes around Africa toward Asia. -1492- Cristóbal Colón (Christopher Columbus) reached the West Indies. -1511- Spanish Conquer Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Cuba. Explore eastern costs of North and South America. -1607- The first successful English colony at Jamestown.
