What is Stress? Stress is your body’s response to the stressors in your life Stressor is anything that causes a stress response in you Stressor can be pleasant or unpleasant Stress is a normal part of life Each person handles stress in their own way

Bad Stress vs. Good stress >Distress is the body’s negative response to an overwhelming stressor >A distressed response can be shown in a physical, emotional, mental, or social way >Distress can make you sick >Distress can interfere with your life

POSITIVE STRESS Occurs when winning succeeding, and achieving Gives us extra energy Helps us achieve more than we think we can It motivates, excites, energizes us Leaves us feeling calm, happy, relaxed

Ticket out the Door list 3 facts about stress 2 – give 2 examples of a stressor 1- Describe what is meant by “distress”

Stress Response How Your Body Reacts “ fight or flight” response Prepares you to fight or run away Unconscious response Endocrine system releases the hormone epinephrine and adrenaline Increases level of sugar

Bodies response to stress Eyes – pupils dilate/widen Muscles –tense for action Heart – rate speeds up…sends more blood to brain & muscles of arms/legs Liver – releases more blood sugar Fatty tissues – release stored fats for more energy Skin – perspiration increases

Physical response to stress Brain – releases hormones to protect you from pain and gives you energy Ears – hearing gets sharper Lungs – breathing rate increases, air passages increase in size Adrenal glands – release adrenaline Stomach – digestion slows down to conserve energy

Fight or Flight Response Word Splash Fight or flight pupils dilate hormone Endocrine system adrenaline Unconscious response blood sugar Heart rate stress/stressor muscles tense

Stress related fatigue physical and mental Difficulty sleeping, frequent headaches Mental/emotional problems, crying for no reason Depressed, bored, frustrated Tense, irritable, overwhelmed Trouble concentrating, making decisions Overeat or lose appetite Suicide Copy Table 3 – Long-term effects on specific body systems

Distress and relationships Bad decisions made under stress can hurt others in the process Anger can affect family/friend relationships Mean to people around you Lack of concentration can affect work and get you in trouble with teachers/boss

Short term ways to handle mental stress Defense mechanisms are automatic behaviors to help us cope with stress/distress This relief is only temporary and an easy way out Can get us in trouble Rationalization Displacement Repression Denial Projection use text overhead with examples

Defense Mechanisms Rationalization – making excuses instead of admitting your mistake Displacement – shifting negative feelings about one person to another person Repression – blocking out unpleasant memories Denial – ignoring reality Projection – putting the blame on someone else for your problem

“Don’t Pop Your Cork on Monday” What can we do to handle stress ? Be more prepared Think ahead Recognize what stresses you Find ways to relax
