Why we are here Provide supporting information for applications to the Good Health Fund for alcohol misuse prevention activities and projects. Provide an overview of the local alcohol strategy and priorities. Give examples of previously successful applications and examples of good practice. Details of where to find further information.

Background for applicants Good Health Fund includes £17,500 available for Alcohol Misuse Prevention activities and projects. We are looking to fund exciting, innovative projects/activities that evidence and support delivery of the local alcohol strategy priorities. Grants £500-£4375 are available for each project proposal.

Alcohol-why it is important High rates of liver disease for people under 75 years in BwD compared with national rates. Increases in alcohol related hospital admission rates. Links to crime, anti-social behaviour, family breakdown. Economic and societal burden.

Reducing Harm, Improving Outcomes: Blackburn with Darwen Alcohol Strategy ( ) The strategy aims to prevent and reduce alcohol-related problems through greater partnership working, utilising the best available evidence of the problems in our community and what is known to work. The aims of the BwD Alcohol Strategy are based on national alcohol policies and local priorities informed by our Alcohol Joint Strategic Needs Assessment.

PRIORITY 3: PREVENTION ACROSS THE LIFE COURSE Aim: To ensure that a coordinated ‘whole family’ approach is taken for initiatives that work with children, young people, working age, older people, individuals, families and communities, protecting those most affected by alcohol. “ Ensure everyone is supported to make informed choices about their alcohol use, protecting those most affected.”

Implement the children & young peoples alcohol pledges Targeted approaches to address the needs of the most vulnerable groups PREVENTION ACROSS THE LIFE COURSE KEY CHALLENGES Address alcohol Issues using whole population approaches

The Children and Young Peoples Alcohol Pledges: 1.Actively seek your views, work to better understand your needs and strive to deliver the services that we know you want to see. 2. Ensure you have the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to keep yourself safe and reduce the potential harm you experience from you own and others’ drinking. 3. Ensure that all services do their best to protect you from alcohol related harm from your earliest years through to adulthood. 4. Ensure that your parents are equipped with the skills, knowledge and confidence to protect you from alcohol-related harm as you grow to adulthood. 5. Do all we can to make sure you grow up in an environment where you are not put under pressure to drink by advertising, the availability of cheap alcohol or illegal sales.

Next Steps We are looking for applications to Good Health Fund that evidence/support delivery of the local alcohol strategy. Examples include: Social marketing campaigns Local research projects e.g. amongst hard to reach groups Early identification and access to treatment programmes Education packages for targeted groups Neighbourhood level approaches and solutions to tackling alcohol related problems Awareness raising events
