Driver Selection and Health 1. driver application form to contain history 2 Drug test on site 3 Medical test before employment and yearly 4 truck drivers check for sleep disorder 5 test drive 6 inexperience do not be afraid to train

Driver testing Educational standards must be sufficient to ensure adequate comprehension of regulations and instructions relevant to the task involved. A simple literacy and innumeracy test will be applied. Maturity of outlook coupled with a responsible attitude must be evident. Physical fitness must be of a satisfactory standard and have been assessed by a qualified medical practitioner. The medical examination shall include tests to establish adequate optical and aural standards and be designed to detect any physical disabilities which would detract from a driver’s ability to carry out the driving functions. Continued satisfactory physical fitness which shall be assessed by periodic medical examinations. Current driving ability with the type of vehicle to which a driver is to be assigned must be proved. An assessment drive must be completed with an approved driver trainer prior to employment.

Truck selection Engine meets euro 4. ABS Automatic or automated transmission Air suspension reduced road damage Good drivers seat to reduce driver fatigue with integrated safety belt Mirrors increased vision increased safety Cameras Speed limit 90 kms

Mirrors visibility

Staff driving training Driver training should not be for driving staff only Select a driving system that works not one that just trains staff to drive trucks Resource your trainer Ensure that after any accident that you retrain Salters Use “Smith Systems”

Journey planning Journey planning incorporates the conduct of formal risk assessment and definition of the value of proposed journeys to ensure that all identified hazards are managed. The prime objective of journey planning is to enhance the safety of all deliveries by identifying the hazards associated with each journey. As a consequence, it may be possible to reduce the driver’s risk exposure by minimizing the number of journeys or maximizing the efficiency of each journey. The key component of journey planning is to conduct a journey assessment, the complexity of which is determined by the risk of existing hazards and routes. Look at what times you pass schools, etc these are high risk

Smith Systems Five Keys 1.Aim High in Steering 2.Get the big Picture 3.Keep your eyes Moving 4.Leave yourself an out Make sure they see you

Use technology Use a good gps Speed check daily Today's GPS can talk with engine to give warnings to office These can include hard braking low oil pressure, high water temp etc

Safety does cost Resource your staff with the tools to train Good Vehicle selection and a good ergonomic work environment will lead to a less fatigue driver Have monthly hse meetings with all staff The lack of training will show in increased accidents Reward your staff for zero accidents

Your reward Your bottom line Increased training will give you a better bottom line by Less accidents Less down time Less maintenance due to less warn and tear Decrease insurance Happy staff

Safety never ends It is and should be a living document
