COURSE SELECTION SESSION Choices for High School Students

COURSE SELECTION STEPS You’ll need: Selection sheet, your Maplewood password and your grad credit check sheet

FRENCH IMMERSION:Use the green selection sheet. We will be scheduling a meeting to discuss the the French Immersion program. Courses are offered in rotation. French Immersion

1.Check that you’ve earned all required courses for your grade, if you haven’t you must sign up for them again. 2.Pick the courses you want to take for compulsories and options, make sure you have the prerequisites. Check into post-secondary requirements to ensure your choices are appropriate. Talk to your parents and teachers. What you do…

What you do… Part 2 3.Use your course selection sheets to register online at home or at school for the courses you want on Maplewood. 4.Make sure that all final selections are on Maplewood by April 27 th. That’s it.

PROGRAMS OF STUDY The level you pick affects the classes you can take. Choose carefully!

POINTS TO CONSIDER… Always take the highest level of math you are capable of completing. Doing so will keep more options open to you down the road. Taking 1 or more grade 12 sciences will assist you in applying to post secondary.

SCIENCES

POINTS TO CONSIDER… GRADE 11:Career in pharmacy, medicine, dentistry? Take BEN30S. It’s more detailed Biology. If you are considering going to university in a science related field you should be taking two or three sciences.

ENGLISH

Business Diploma Can earn this along with your regular high school diploma by taking 8 credits of business courses 1.5 of the credits are compulsory so you need 6.5 options over S2-S4 This year we will be offering dual credit courses in partnership with UCN. Open to grade 12 students only.

Cooperative Vocational Education CVE is open to grade 11 students who have a complete grade 10. Students must still complete compulsory English & Math courses. If you did not take CVE in grade 11 you can start in grade 12. To earn a CVE diploma you must earn a minimum of 8 credits (880 hours of work time) and can earn a maximum of 14 (1540 hours of work time) A student can earn both a CVE diploma and full high school diploma.

Norman Technical Vocational Initiative Students would start this program in their second semester of Grade 11. Runs for two consecutive semesters (2 nd semester of grade 11 and first semester of grade 12) Potential to earn 8 credits Return to academic compulsory courses (English Math, Phys. Ed) in Grade 12 semester two.

TVI – Trade Options Heavy Duty Mechanics – Flin Flon Carpentry – Cranberry Portage Welding - The Pas

Eligibility Must have completed grade 10 Must complete Grade 11 English, Math, Phys. Ed in first semester. Must be 16 + years Commitment

High School Apprenticeship Option A student can earn 1 credit for every 110 hours that they work. Must be enrolled in grade 9 – 12. Must be working under a journeyperson as an apprentice

ALTERNATE EDUCATION OPTIONS If you: a. Have a timetable conflict, b. Want to take courses not offered here, c. Have special circumstances that make taking a scheduled class difficult – look into Web CT or Independent Study Courses

ALTERNATE EDUCATION OPTIONS Independent Study Centre - Web CT courses - Online courses (Informnet) - Correspondence courses LIFT courses – grade 9 and 10 only Many Faces courses

Community Service Credit A student may earn a credit for doing 110 hours of volunteer work in the community This must be discussed with the school principal prior to any hours counting towards credit The student must identify with the principal the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they want to learn from the experience Accurate records must be kept and verified by a suitable supervisor

Applying to Post-Secondary Some universities want 5 – 6 credits at the 40 level in a variety of combinations For many schools you must have 1 science and 1 humanities in addition to compulsories Check university courses to see of any prerequisites you may need for first year classes. Many colleges act on the basis of first to apply with qualifications and you are in.

Grade 12 – Category “A” Scholarships 1.Awards of $1000 or more 2.Required courses: English Comprehensive 40S Pre-calculus Math 40S Or Applied Math 40S Biology 40S, Chemistry 40S or Physics 40S One Humanities at the 40S level (2 nd English, French, History, Law, Economics) One option at the 40S level Phys. Ed 40S (no grade) 3.Of the courses being used for scholarship 4 must be from Hapnot Collegiate 4.Student must be in residence for the entire final semester at Hapnot or a permanent resident of Flin Flon catchment area for a minimum of 2 of the last 4 years 5.Be eligible for graduation

Grade 12 – Category “B” Scholarships 1.All open awards under $ Required courses: English 40S (Language & Technical Communication in vocational programs only) One Senior 4 math One Senior 4 Science Phys. Ed. 40S Two other senior 4 courses 3.Of the courses being used for scholarship 3 must be from Hapnot Collegiate 4.Be Eligible for Graduation

Grade 12 - Category “C” Scholarships 1.All closed awards under $ Meet the special criteria determined by donor. 3.Required courses: English 40S(Language & Technical Communication 40S for Vocational programs only) One senior 4 math Phys. Ed. 40S Three other senior 4 course 4.3 courses must be from Hapnot Collegiate 5.Be Eligible for graduation
