2. Differences between Grade Nine and High School
Students all take the same core courses.
Students choose from a variety of streams and core courses
Students pass the entire grade.
Students pass each class individually.
Students have little choice in complimentary programs.
Students have a wide range of complimentary courses to choose from.
Students work one year at a time.
Students need to keep a three year focus.

A student will earn five credits for each core class. (Math, Science, English, and Social Studies).

Students will earn one credit for each Career and Technology Studies (CTS) module they successfully complete (50% or more).
A student registered in a CTS course every other day should earn a minimum of three credits in one semester but often they earn more.
A student registered in a CTS course every day should earn a minimum of five credits in one semester and they often earn more.
CTS modules are competency based, which means upon demonstrating competency in the outcomes a grade is received and the student can move on to the next module.

Fine Arts courses such as Band and Art are not offered in modules and must be taken for a specified number of hours to earn the appropriate number of credits.

8. Three Year Focus: The Credit System
Grade 10 and 11 students typically earn 40 – 50 credits in their respective years. MHHS does not allow spares for Gr. 10 students and does not allow spares for Gr. 11 students unless they are replacing credits with a RAP.
Grade 12 students will have acquired and be enrolled in a minimum of 105 accumulated potential credits after which they may have a senior privilege/spare.

9. Academic Courses
There are three strands for high school English and Social Studies
English 10-1, 20-1, 30-1 Required by universities in Alberta for entrance.
English 10-2, 20-2, 30-2 Accepted at most colleges, technical school, and trade schools.
English 10-4, 20-4, Only taken if student is pursuing an 80 credit Certificate of Achievement.
Social Studies 10-1, 20-1, 30-1 Needed for some university programs.
Social Studies 10-2, 20-2, 30-2 Accepted at most colleges, technical school and trade schools.
Social Studies 10-4, Only taken if student is pursuing an 80 credit Certificate of Achievement.

10. Academic Courses
Mathematics and Science have a larger variety of courses.
Mathematics 20-1, Needed for many university and college programs.
Mathematics 20-2, Accepted for a variety of university, college and other programs. Check their entrance requirements.
Math 10-3, 20-3, May be accepted for trades programs; meets math graduation requirement.
Mathematics 31. Calculus, needed for engineering at Tech schools, colleges and universities, recommended for other programs as well.

11. Academic Courses There are a wide variety of choices in the Sciences
Science 10, 20, 30 A general science course sequence with a Grade diploma exam. Science 30 is accepted by many universities and colleges depending on program.
Biology 20, 30 Science 10 is a pre-requisite; necessary for a variety of programs at college and university.
Chemistry 20, 30 Science 10 is a pre-requisite; necessary for a variety of programs at college and university.
Physics 20, 30 Science 10 is a pre-requisite; necessary for a variety of programs at college and university.
Science 14, 24 Accepted for a few trade programs; meets minimum math graduation requirement.

18. Off-Campus Programs
There are a variety of off campus programs at MHHS. Please see Mr. Taylor for more information.
Work Experience – A program that allows students to earn credits for learning that takes place in a work place. The work place position can be a paid position and done outside of the school day.

19. Off-Campus Programs
Green Certificate – An intense agricultural program that allows students to earn credit for demonstrating proficiency in a variety of agricultural related fields, including Cow-Calf operation, Swine, Sheep, Equine and others. Testing for this program is done at Lethbridge College.

20. Off-Campus Programs
Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) – A program that allows students to earn high school credit, along with apprenticeship hours in a certified trade. Work hours must be done under the supervision of a journeyman in the designated trade.

21. Off-Campus Programs
Special Projects – A program that allows a student to pursue an area of interest that is not directly covered by any Alberta high school course. The student must complete a proposal and have it approved.
