Historical Fiction A great way to integrate social studies and excellent literature! - Lee-Anne Spalding, M. Ed.

History vs. Historical Fiction A story of the world, its people, and of cultures that rise and fall over time Tells the stories of history, recreating time, places and events; weaving facts into a fictional story Realistic but differs from the realistic fiction genre in that, these stories are set in the past

Of the literature circle books I recommended, which ones fall into this category? Look in your syllabus for the list :)

Literature Circle books… Bud Not Buddy A Year Down Yonder Out of the Dust Number the Stars Why do they fall into this category?

Why did Scott O’Dell create the Scott O’Dell Award for Historical Fiction in 1982? He wanted more authors to work in this genre in order for children to learn about the past via literature!

Why use it? Children need to know about history and the world before they were in it! Helps students understand what it was like to live in another time (one without all of the tech. advances we have today!) “It is a lively and fascinating way to transmit the story of the past to the guardians of the future.” p. 206
