Semicolons Semicolons can sometimes act like periods.

Semicolons are used to … Join together two independent sentences. – Example: I have a signed Batman comic. It is the most valuable comic I own. You can use a semicolon to join those two sentences together to form a larger sentence. I have a signed Batman comic; it is the most valuable comic I own.

More examples Miss Marple is a great detective. She has solved hundreds of crimes. BECOMES Miss Marple is a great detective; she has solved hundreds of crimes. Scott was ready to go home when he got off work he was tired from having to work two shifts back-to-back. BECOMES Scott was ready to go home when he got off work; he was tired from having to work two shifts back-to-back.

WARNING When using a semicolon to join together two independent sentences, you must make sure that the sentences relate to each other and have some common bond or idea. – Examples of what not to do I have a lovely bunch of coconuts; Barack Obama is our president. Grape jelly is delicious; who scared the cat? The cheese is spoiled; Mary has odd tastes in hats.

Semicolons are used to … Join together two independent thoughts that are connected by a conjunctive adverb (or “joining word”) – Example: My karate instructor was tough however, he never got upset. You can use a semicolon to join those two sentences together to form a larger sentence. – Example: My karate instructor was tough; however, he never got upset.

Common Conjunctive Adverbs (“Joining Words”) Also As a result Besides For example Furthermore However In addition Instead Meanwhile Moreover Nevertheless Similarly Then Therefore Thus

Semicolons Semicolons can also act like commas.

Semicolons are used to … Help to better separate groups of words that already have commas. – Example: My favorite foods are pizza with pepperoni, peppers, and mushrooms, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and liver and onions. Use a semicolon to replace where you would normally put commas to separate the ideas or word groups. – Example: My favorite foods are pizza with pepperoni, peppers, and mushrooms; peanut butter and jelly sandwiches; and liver and onions.
