A compound sentence is made by joining two INDEPENDENT CLAUSES that have closely related ideas. INDEPENDENT CLAUSE + INDEPENDENT CLAUSE

5 Compound sentences & commas
In a compound sentence… …a coordinating conjunction is preceded by a comma. Time drags during study hall, and Ted fidgets. …a conjunctive adverb is preceded by a semicolon and followed by a comma. Time drags during study hall; therefore, Ted fidgets. …the conjunction may sometimes (rarely) be understood, and only a comma is used. Time drags, Ted fidgets.
