Key to Ex 3: 1. A (mother or father) speaking to a young adult child (son or daughter). Many of the phrases imply that the speaker is an older person who has experienced their own journey through life and who is offering love to the young person to help him/ her begin on his / her own journey through life. For example:” I ‘ve saved the summer… and I’ve saved some sunlight…till you’re older…I know no answer to help you on your way. We know the speaker is probably a parent: But if you’ve a need for love, I’ll give you all I own. We know the son/ daughter is a young adult: when you were but nineteen. 2. B

Reading Task Close your eyes while listening to the poems. And write down your feelings or thoughts about each poem afterwards.

Ex 2 Poem A Tang Poem This poem has beautiful imagery that conveys deep feelings. There are many things that this poem makes the reader think about. For example, it contrasts lightheartedness (because of the singing birds) and heavyheartedness (because of the thought of broken blossoms; it contrasts morning and night, and creation (of spring)) and destruction (of the storm)

Poem B Adverb poem Number of lines: two sets of four lines Rhythm: regular strong beat( bolded syllables) Hungrily the cat consumes the fish; Hungrily I close my eyes and make a wish; Hungrily the boy runs to the road’s end; Hungrily the driver takes the next bend; Hungrily the young man loves life at sea; Hungrily the beautiful girl looks at me; Hungrily the seal dives down into the deep; Hungrily I fall into bed and sleep.

Rhyme: four pairs of rhyming lines (fish/ wish, end/ bend, sea/ me, deep/ sleep) Repetition: hungrily is repeated at the beginning of each line regularly Part of speech: the adverb hungrily starts each line

Poem C song This is a love song. Rhythm: regular strong beat (see bolded syllables below) If you were the only girl in the world and I were the only boy! Nothing else would matter in the world today We could go on loving in the same old way! A garden of Eden just made for two With nothing to mar our joy I would say such wonderful things to you There would be such wonderful things to do And I were the only boy!

Rhyme: two pairs of rhyming lines(today/ way, you/ do, ) Repetition: first two lines are repeated at the end of the song

Poem D cinquain Number of lines: five Part of speech: line 1—a noun; line 2—two adjectives; line 3—three ing verbs; line 4– a four-word phrase; line 5—a noun Topic: sunshine

Poem E haiku Number of lines: three Number of syllables: 17 (line 1 =5, line 2= 7, line 3=5) Meaning: this haiku conveys feelings about the temporary nature of life, the certainty that we all age (this is one interpretation). It contrasts the season of autumn (when leaves are dying) to the autumn of the poet’s life when his face is becoming like his father’s (this is one interpretation.)

Listening task Ex 1 1. F 2. T 3. T 4. F 5. T 6. T 7. F 8. F

Ex 2 Sam Ben Sally What kind of poem is the student going to write? Cinquain haiku List poem What topic is the student going to write about? ben Nature The students in her class

Ex 3 We know they are good friends because they are talking in a very informal way. Two examples of their informal talk are: Sam, don’t you remember- we learnt about them in class (Ben wouldn’t say “don’t you remember ”) to Sam if he didn’t know him well as it is focusing on his lack of knowledge. Oh Sam, it’s going to be funny. (Sally is talking to Sam in a very familiar way when she says “oh Sam.”)

We also know they are good friends because Sam is able to admit to the others that he doesn’t know what haiku is (what are those?) , that haiku sounds too difficult for him to write (sounds a bit difficult to me), that he doesn’t like the homework (That horrible poetry homework we have to do). If they weren’t good friends he wouldn’t reveal his feelings to that extent. Sam also jokes a lot with the other two which he wouldn’t do if he didn’t know them very well. For example: Well, I always knew you were crazy! You can leave me out of it! Guess what I’m going to do it on?... You!

Writing Practice This is me Sample writing: The sky is blue, The river is clean, A girl is playing with water. Oh, this is me. The wind is going away, The moon is climbing in the sky, A girl is reading by the light. The dawn is breaking, The clock is ringing, A girl is washing face before the mirror. A confident girl, A girl smiles at everyone.
