Technology in the classroom  Many resources available  Open source applications (Free!)  Web is a wealth of information  Before implementing technology thoroughly investigate the technology you want to ensure it will achieve your desired results  IT Departments or Instructional Technology Facilitators should be involved in the process of software selection and are often great resources for technology ideas

An Online Classroom Jake Moodle

Quiz  Write down your answers to the following questions  All answers are either true or false  Once you are finished I will have you grade your own paper

Questions 1. H2O is hot water, and CO2 is cold water. 2. Water is composed of two gins, Oxygin and Hydrogin. Oxygin is pure gin. Hydrogin is water and gin. 3. A super saturated solution is one that holds more than it can hold. 4. A fossil is an extinct animal. The older it is, the more extinct it is. 5. Germinate: To become a naturalized German.

Answers  I am sure as you all realized all of the answers were FALSE  It was less a test of skill but a demonstration of how Moodle could assist you in the classroom  It really will make sense in a few slides!

What can you do with Moodle?  Activities  Resources  Gradebook  Calendar  Quizzes  Polls/Surveys  Forums

A Resource for Your Classroom By Deborah Google Apps

PROS & CONS OF TECHNOLOGY  Unless education reflects the world in which it exists, it has no relevance for the students.  Pros: Computer as Tutors, Aid in disabled students, students can go through a lesson several times until they understand it.  Cons: Taking into account the emotional needs of students.  Pros out weighs the cons.

Google APPS For my part I am going to share with you about Google APPs.  Google APPS.  It is a service from Google for using Custom domain names with several Google products. It features several Web Application with similar functionality to traditional office suite, including Gmail, Google Calendar, Talk, Docs and Sites.

GET APPS for your school!  Top 10 reasons to use Google Apps  1. Students will love you for it  2. Free up your IT  3. Easy to deploy  4. Save money  5. You're not alone

GET APPS for your school! Cont.  6. Google protects your privacy  7. Security as powerful as... well, Google  8. Innovation in real-time  9. Collaborate globally  10. We've got your back

Google Apps  Google APPS: From "Docs and Spreadsheets," which provide many of the same core tools that you find in Word and Excel; and Google Calendar and Gmail, the applications that offer an alternative to Outlook. Google APPS has a tour that shows you how these applications together can ease your ability to collaborate with others, and allow you access to your documents, mail and appointments from any computer at any location

Google APPS “empire”.  The most important thing with any technology be to know when and how use it. You can find unlimited resources on the technology you want to use or on You Tubes programs that several people are making for. Google Apps: are but a few applications that you can use. In this increasingly digitalized classroom get ready to compete for kids attention in class from all that is out there and incorporating technology will do just that.

Website Design by Judith Technology in Education

Criteria in deciding on a web host  Reliability - strong customer satisfaction reviews  Support – how quickly the web host service responds  Pricing - a lot of web hosts offer free web design service  Usability – user interface should be tested

Benefits for the student or parent  Separate homes have access to the same school information  Can get information when it’s convenient for them  Get timely reminders of homework, tests, projects, or class events  Get to know the teacher better by reading about his or her biography and qualifications  Information is always available and does not get lost

Benefits for the teacher  It eliminates the needs for weekly letters  It eliminates many parent phone calls and notes  Parents who share custody have access to all assignments  It helps the student take responsibility for his or her work  It’s another way to engage the student outside the classroom

Biggest selling point is that it can be integrated with Google account; can be established as a collaborative work space which is nice if you teach as part of team and want all members to be able to update the site as needed; single-click page creation; customizable look and feel Advertising free; remains free even if you post a lot of audio or video content; provides good tutorials and forums for first time users Can include videos, calendars, polls, and a wide variety of third party widgets; offers a wide variety templates and layouts; might be a little too basic for people with a higher level of comfort with technology Provides free service as well as premium service; editing and customizing options allow users to create pages that are little more clean and professional looking; TechCrunch said that it's “a basic webpage designer that Apple should envy...”TechCrunch said Easy to use, drag and drop, interface makes it easy to change the look and feel of your website; advertising free; the user interface is intuitive enough for most students to use on their own Web hosts that offer free web site design service

Web hosts that offer free web site design service Ability to use more than one template within the website, user is not locked into using one format for all of the content Customizing is easily done through a drag and drop editor; all of the pages on the site are automatically indexed for ease of visitor navigation Impressive selection of templates (more than 200); claims to be the easiest website builder Has features designed specifically for teachers; good system for posting and collecting assignments and communicating with parents
