Protestant Reformers Huldreich Zwingli was Swiss protestant who wanted to establish a theocracy, or a church run state in Zurich, Switzerland. He and his 1,500 followers were defeated by an army of 8,000 Catholics. In 1531.

Protestant Reformers John Calvin – A Swiss reformer who developed the doctrine of predestination, which taught that God directs everything that happens in the past, the present, and the future. John Knox a follower of Calvin taught his followers in Scotland that they are only to obey their rulers if they were upright and moral and true to God.

The Anglican Church Reformation ideas flowed to England in the 1500’s but was brought to a head when Henry VIII and the Pope had a quarrel. Henry was unable to produce a male heir with his wife, Catherine Aragon, and his request for divorce was turned down. With the help of the English Parliament, Henry VIII separated from the church and was given control the clergy.

She attempted to restore the Catholic Church in England by burning hundreds of protestants at the stake, earning her the name, “Bloody Mary”.

The Anglican Church In 1558 Mary’s sister Elizabeth I would become Queen of England. She would create the Anglican Church, which was a blend of protestant belief and Catholic rituals.
