2 Today we will learn about…  Other religious reformers and movements of the Protestant Reformation.

3 Impact of Luther AAAAlthough Luther was intolerant of dissent, even by other Protestant reformers, the success of Luther in northern Germany and Scandinavia encouraged others to challenge Catholic Church authority. PPPPeasant Revolt in Germany

4 Ulrich Zwingli (1484-1531)  Swiss Priest  Taught that the Bible, not the Pope, is the true religious authority.  He converted certain Swiss cantons (districts) to Protestantism.

5 John Calvin (1509-1564)  A French Religious Reformer  He fled France to safety in Geneva, Switzerland.  Author of Institutes of the Christian Faith.  He became a leading spokesman for the Protestant Reformation.  He believed in predestination  He regulated the moral lives of his believers by frowning on dancing and card playing.  He set up a theocracy in Geneva and extolled a serious, moral, and hard working life.

7 Calvinism Spreads Rapidly  Switzerland – Swiss Reformed Church  Holland – Dutch Reformed Church  Scotland – Calvinism became the official church – The Presbyterian Church  France – Huguenots  England – Puritans  In the 17 th century many Puritans fled England to the New World colony of Massachusetts and founded the Congregational Church.

8 The Anabaptists  Their beliefs were highly controversial which led to them being bitterly persecuted throughout Europe.  They believed in: Adult Baptism and a separation of Church and State.  Their followers were Quakers, Mormons, Amish, Mennonites, and some Evangelists.

10 Reformation in England  Henry VIII, King of England, was a loyal Roman Catholic.  When Luther broke away from the RCC, Henry VIII wrote an essay criticizing Luther.  Henry’s effort earned him the title – Defender of the Faith – by the Pope

11 Henry’s Dilemma HHHHenry wanted a male heir more than anything else. HHHHe had received a special dispensation from the Pope in order to marry his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. TTTTogether, Henry and Catherine had five children. Four died immediately after birth. TTTThey had a daughter who survived into adulthood, Mary. HHHHenry felt that his marriage was cursed and he wanted a divorce from Catherine.

13 A Stalemate  Henry wanted the Pope to grant him an annulment from Catherine.  Catherine’s nephew, Charles V, was fighting against Martin Luther and the pope was Charles’ prisoner.  Henry threatens to kick the RCC out of England if the pope does not grant him a divorce.  Lost in all of this, was Henry had fallen in love with Anne Boleyn and he also desired the Church lands for the crown.

14 1534  Henry kicks the Church out of England and passes an Act called the Act of Supremacy which institutes the Anglican Church as the Church of England and makes Henry head of the Church.  The new church annuls their marriage and Henry marries Anne Boleyn.

17 5 Sock Curling Facts about Henry VIII  Henry was never supposed to have been King.  He compared his fourth wife to a horse.  He was buried with his third wife.  He is rumored to be haunting Hampton Court Palace.  He was involved with Anne Boelyn’s sister. This was the subject of Philippa Gregory’s book The Other Boelyn Girl
