The One and Only Ivan By Akash Narayanan

Introduction Hello, my name is Akash Narayanan. I have made this PowerPoint to discuss the One and Only Ivan book and I will show you things I created for my final product.

Summary In this book there are animals that live at a mall for the sole purpose of human entertainment. A new baby elephant arrives at the zoo and another animal dies. Ivan, the main character and also the gorilla, makes a promise to the animal before she dies to protect the new baby elephant named Ruby. Now Ivan does whatever he can to get Ruby and himself to a zoo. Eventually, Ivan’s artwork gets a child named Julia to call the zoo. The zoo workers come to the mall and take Ivan and Ruby to a zoo where they could live safely.

Interview Today we will be interviewing four of the characters in the One and Only Ivan and seeing how they felt throughout the story. Their names are Ivan, Stella, Ruby, and Mack.

Interview with Ivan Q:How does it feel to be contained in a cage? A:First of all, it is a domain. Second of all, it is so boring. Can you imagine sitting around all day in the same place for your entire life? Q:What is the difference between the mall an the zoo? A:The mall was terrible. Those rotten people always sticking their faces to my glass. Now I have a wide open space where I can actually stay away from humans a little more often. Click to go back to interview page

Interview with Stella Q: Were you surprised that Ivan promised that he would get Ruby to the zoo? A:I was very surprised. Taking a child under his wing like that is very brave. It may seem easy but it is a huge responsibility. Q: Why did you make Ivan promise to care for Ruby as if you knew you were going to pass away? A:I’d been at the mall for a long time. I knew that they were short on money and wouldn’t be able to get me proper medical treatment so I made sure that Ruby wouldn’t suffer like I did. Click here to go back to interview page

Interview with Ruby Q:How did you feel when you got to the zoo? A:I was so relieved. I was scared that I would die at the mall like Aunt Stella, but Ivan saved me! Q:Why were you so scared when the people came to take you to the zoo? A:Even though they saved me from inside a hole once, they still killed my family. I thought they were coming back for me. Interview with Mack Q:Were you mad at Ivan for him redecorating the billboard and causing the mall to close down? A:I didn’t know what to think of him. He is very wondrous and confusing. Q:Did you mean to use the claw-stick on Ruby? A:No, I was just trying to intimidate her so she would start moving again. I would only use the claw-stick if 100% necessary.
