eBooks and AudioBooks A 'digital book' is the electronic version of a print book that offers the convenience, access, and unique capabilities of the digital realm. Some digital books are designed to be listened to (downloadable audio books) and others are created for on-screen reading (eBooks). 'eBook' is short for 'electronic book', a digital version of a print book that has been optimized for on-screen reading. eBooks are available in a variety of different formats.

OverDrive Videos and Music An OverDrive Video title is a digitally-protected video that has been optimized for download. OverDrive Video titles are built using the Microsoft® Windows Media Video format, which enhances the quality for desktop viewing and portable device use. An OverDrive Music title is a digitally-protected music file available for download. OverDrive Music titles are built using the Microsoft® Windows Media Audio format.

OverDrive Media Console A free, easy-to-use application, OverDrive Media Console allows you to download and enjoy OverDrive audio books, music, and video on most Windows computers. Use OverDrive Media Console to navigate, play, and bookmark OverDrive media titles, and to manage and customize your media library. OverDrive Media Console grants you the added functionality to transfer media to supported portable devices, and to burn CDs of audio books and music (when allowed by the publisher). OverDrive Media files are protected using the Windows Media DRM digital rights management platform. This results in a packaged file that only the intended recipient should be able to open.

How do I get to my eBook or digital media title after I've downloaded them? Adobe Reader automatically saves a copy of the downloaded eBook to your computer’s hard drive. OverDrive Media Console saves audio books, video, and music to your computer’s hard drive. Mobipocket saves eBooks to your computer’s hard drive.

To open an Adobe eBook open Adobe Reader and select: File > Digital Editions > My Digital Editions.

To open an OverDrive audio book, video, or music title, open OverDrive Media Console and select the desired title from the 'Media Library'.

To open a Mobipocket eBook, open the Mobipocket Reader and select the desired title from My Library.

What do I have checked out? Greater Phoenix Digital Library maintains a history of borrowed digital books called 'My Digital Bookshelf'. During the lending period, eBooks and digital media titles can be re-downloaded from the My Digital Bookshelf feature.

What happens to an eBook or digital media title when I've finished using it? A downloaded eBook or digital media title remains on your computer, even after it has expired or been returned, until you manually delete the digital book file. The deleting process varies by format

If you are using Adobe Reader... To delete an expired Adobe eBook file, open Adobe Reader. Go to File > Digital Editions > My Digital Editions. Locate the cover image of the eBook you wish to delete. Click on the clock in the upper-right corner of the cover image. A box will pop up with the expiration date. Click the 'Delete' button.

If you are using OverDrive Media Console… Open OverDrive Media Console. Locate the audio book, video, or music title you wish to delete in the 'Media Library'. Single-click on the title to select it, then click the 'Delete' button.

Once the lending period is over, what happens to the eBooks and digital media titles I checked out? You do not need to return borrowed digital books. Once the lending period has elapsed, the title is automatically 'returned' to the library. Although the eBook or digital media title will remain on your machine, it will no longer be readable.

Placing a Hold – Find a Title

Your Digital Hold Shelf

Once a title that I have placed on hold becomes available for me to check out, how much time do I have to check out the title before my hold expires? Once the title you have placed on hold becomes available for check out, you will receive an indicating the digital book is available. If 48 hours elapse from the time you receive the , and you have yet to check out the title, the book is returned to the collection of available titles, making it available to other patrons at your library.

To cancel a hold, please take the following steps: Log in to your account. From any page, choose the 'My Digital Account' button. Click the 'My Digital Holds' link. This will provide a list of titles on which you have placed a hold. Click the 'Remove' link next to the title in which you are no longer interested. This action will cancel your hold.

Can I use eBooks and digital media titles on multiple machines? · To use Adobe eBooks on multiple machines, each machine must first be activated to the same account using Adobe's 'Named Activation' option. ·To use Mobipocket eBooks on multiple machines, you need to install Mobipocket Reader on any machine on which you intend to read a Mobipocket eBook.
