Grammar, Spelling, and Vocabulary Get out a piece of paper (for your binder) and label it: Sentence Dictations Grammar, Spelling, and Vocabulary

Directions Listen to the following sentence, and write it with correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. ALL of these sentences will be part of your binder check. Number and date them as we go (you can keep them on the same page)

1. Wednesday, November 7, 2012 To avoid horrendous grammar and spelling mistakes and to get immediate feedback, sentence dictations will be given daily. Infinitive phrase = to plus verb If you start a sentence with one, place a comma after the phrase Parallelism – phrases “match” (to avoid & to get) Spelling words!

Please Do Now Underneath your sentence dictation from yesterday DRAW A LINE & PUT THE DATE (11/8). (*if you were not here yesterday, start a new sheet of paper with the date) Then: List at least 3 symbols in everyday life that are used to represent something else. For example, <3 symbolizes love

Please Do Now A “Please Do Now” is a short task that you begin as soon as you walk in the door. It will go in your binder AFTER yesterday’s “sentence dictation” and BEFORE today’s sentence dictation. Separate them by them dates. Draw a line to show the separation.

Binders Do not clean them out yet—we need to finish the short story unit Grading System for Binders: Spelling Worksheets & Quizzes = 25% Sentence Dictations = 25% “Please Do Now's” = 25% Notes & Worksheets = 25%

Sentence Dictation #2 2. Symbolism is indispensable to writers and advertisers because it allows them to associate their desires with our subconscious. To = preposition (shows relationship) To writers and advertisers = Prepositional phrase Because = subordinate conjunction

Please Do Now YOU HAVE 2 MINUTES AFTER THE BELL RINGS TO: Get out your Please Do Now’s and Sentence Dictations Draw a line Skip a Space Put today’s date, Friday 11/9 Write: harass, height, hierarchy, horrendous, humorous, ignorance, immediate, incredible, independent, indispensable

Sentence Dictation #3 To grasp the concept of symbolism even more, you will be discovering some popular allusions to the number seven. To grasp = infinitive phrase (comma rule) Allusions – references to well-known people, places, things, or ideas. Spell out all numbers that can be written with two or less words. (1-100, 200…)

Please Do Now Underneath your last Sentence Dictation: Draw a line Skip a space Add the Date: 11/12 THEN: Create a paragraph using at least 5 of your vocabulary words. (vocab packet & posters) Yes, you must use correct, grammar, spelling and punctuation. You will be reading it out loud to a partner.

Sentence Dictation #4 It’s important that we take responsibility for our own actions and that we do not easily pass judgment on others. Its Vs. It’s = possessive pronoun vs. it is No Comma before “and” because there are not TWO sentences on each side (compound sentence) That…two parallel phrases combined by “and”

Please Do Now Finish Vocab Packet (visual poster descriptions on sideboard if needed) Turn in vocab packet BEFORE timer goes off (7 minutes) Work on Spelling List #7

11/13 Sentence Dictation #5 My vocabulary packet worth fifty points was due today, and I have a quiz on my knowledge of “The Masque of the Red Death” on Thursday and a spelling quiz on Friday. , and = compound sentence (2 sentences joined by a conjunction (and)) And = joining two phrases (no comma) “” – Short Stories go in quotations Capitalize the days of the week (proper noun)

11/14 Please Do now (skip space, draw a line, add the date) Think of a popular “Brand” of Anything (clothing, shoes, sports teams, toothpaste, hair products, food…) Draw OR Describe the “Logo” Write down the colors associated with it

Sentence Dictation #6 Because color offers an instantaneous method for conveying meaning and messages without words, brands and color are inextricably linked. Because = subordinate conjunction Start a sentence with subordinate clause = comma where the clause ends Clause = subject + verb, but no complete thought Inextricably = inseparable

11/15 Please Do Now Complete Part I of the “Symbolism of Colors in Branding and Advertising Activity” Read the article (on the cart) As you read: Underline the word “color” along with the rest of the sentence Circle the name of every color, and underline the rest of the sentence.

No sentence dictation today. Good luck on your quiz. The answers to #’s 3, 15, & 18 have been given to you—use them! #’s 51-55 (on the back) 1=A, 2=B, 3=C, 4=D, 5=E Tomorrow, you will find an advertisement and complete Part II of the symbolism activity

Vocab Packet Grading Rewrite the word: 10 points Definitions: 20 points Context of the story: 10 points Visual Posters: 10 points

11/27 Please Do Now From memory, write what the following colors COULD symbolize: Blue – Red – Black – Green – Orange – Pink – Purple – White – Brown –

Sentence Dictation #7 Using at least two specific references from the article “Color & Branding”, prove that the company purposefully chose at least two specific colors to convey a meaning or message. Article in Quotation Marks Place comma where gerund phrase ends Gerund phrase = start a sentence with -ing Comma outside of the quotes because it’s NOT dialogue

11/28 Please Do Now Get your laptop Open OpenOffice – Writer Create an MLA heading (left-hand side) Your name Ms. Salopek English 10-period # 28 November 2012

Sentence Dictation #8 Typed under your MLA heading In the article “Color & Branding”, Jill Morton states, “Brands communicate meanings with the language of color and shape” (1). You may NOT use this example in your paper. You MUST use at least 2 similar examples in your paper (to prove your points!)

11/29 Please Do Now Write and Define (TRY!) the following 5 Categories of the CDT: Comprehension - Vocabulary – Literary Elements and Devices – Persuasive Techniques – Text Organizational Skills –

Sentence Dictation #9 If I have perfect attendance for the Keystone Exams, Ms. Salopek will give me five extra credit points on my next Classroom Diagnostic Test. If = subordinate conjunction If…Exams = subordinate clause = comma rule Example of a “Complex” sentence
