Your Guide: TExES PPR Generalist/ Content Area Exams To the TExES PPR and Generalist/ Content Area Exams Presented By: Jennifer Harper Punam Singh Jonathan Blaylock Melissa Paulette

Purpose The purpose of this presentation is to explain the requirements and process for the taking the TExES content area exams and PPR, as well as provide study suggestions.

About the TExES Exams

About the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities (PPR) Exam  Assessment of the required knowledge and skills of an entry-level educator  A mandatory theory test that is composed of scenarios with multiple choice answers  Paper-Based Test (PBT) or Computer Administered Test (CAT)

About the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities (PPR) Exam  EC-12; 5 Hours to complete 90 questions  Must make at least 240 points in order to pass  Competency and descriptive statements  Based on educator standards and divided into four domains with a total of thirteen competencies

Domains  Domain 1: Designing instruction and assessment to promote student  Domain 2: Creating a Positive, Productive Classroom Environment  Domain 3: Implementing Effective, Responsive Instruction and Assessment  Domain 4: Fulfilling professional Roles and Responsibilities.

About the Area Content Exam  Assesses content mastery for a specific subject and grade level  Paper-Based Test (PBT) or Computer Administered Test (CAT)  Generalist EC-6, Generalist 4-8, Secondary Content Certification Tests

About the Area Content Exam  Must pass the PPR exam first  Submit your certificate of completion  Take the practice exam  Obtain confirmation from TExES Academy Coordinator that you have met all criteria and are approved to register for the official exam

Preparing for Your TExES Academy

TExES Academy  End of block one Dr. Young enrolls you in TExES Academy through Blackboard  Figure out which tests you need to take  READ READ READ through the TExES Academy blackboard course  If you, or someone you know is not enrolled in TExES Academy by the end of block one, Dr. Young at

More About TExES Academy  Watch the welcome presentation, very simple to understand and fully covers the topic  Follow the discussion  There is an approval process to be allowed to take the test

Start Studying Soon  Your core classes will help you pass the content exam  Your teaching courses will help you pass the PPR  If you are a Generalist, get textbooks from your grade level and begin to study

Ask Questions  When you observe or meet teachers ask how they prepared for their exams  Ask your professors for good resources  Buy old used textbooks to study for content  Again, Follow the TExES Academy discussions

Study Techniques

Study Tips  TExES Content and PPR  Teacher Certification Exams  Know the thirteen competencies, the four domains, and key terms  Know what the questions are asking and how the picture perfect teacher would respond to such scenarios to ensure success for all students

Study Tips  Don’t wait until the last minute; start studying today!  Don’t just read and expect to memorize; study strategically!  Stop studying a couple of days before the exam; properly prepare for the day!

Taking the Test

Taking the test  Take the practice test to get familiar with the type of question you get on the official test  The practice test is exactly administered in the same way as the real test.  No cell phones allowed in the testing room

Approval for the official test  Score should be 70% on the practice test to get approved to take the official test for both PPR and Generalist/Content exam  Dr. Andria Young communicates the score through blackboard  Her id is

Official Test  Once approved register for the official test.  For registration go to website  Cost: $ 120 for each subject  Take computer based test as result comes out sooner - within 3-5 days

Taking the Official Test  Its better you visit the test site once before the actual test  Arrive 30 minutes early for the exam  Leave your purse in car  No cell phones, water or snack allowed in the testing room

Taking the Official Test  Fill out a form to agree on the terms and conditions of the exam  They take picture and finger prints and then let you in the testing room  The test is long – 5 hours  Keep track of time. Look at your pace and adjust

While Taking the Test  It’s advisable to take few quick breaks – Relieves stress, Increases concentration  Remember the clock does not stop in the break time  Don’t get stuck on a question for long. Mark it for review and revisit it later  Often your first intuition is the best. So don’t get into the trap of changing your answers in last moment

Remember to get these exams out of the way as fast as possible

You will do great as long as you put effort into studying for the TExES exams Good Luck!!!
