My name is Mrs. Marrero, I’m an English teacher at Lurgrea Central College in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico. English has always been my favorite subject. I hope you enjoy this module as much as I have enjoyed preparing it. Have fun!

Introduction In this module will be learning about nouns.

Objective(s):  By the end of this lesson the student will be able to: I.Define the term noun II.Differentiate between concretes, abstract, count and noncount and collective nouns.

Why we use nouns?  Whatever exists, we assume, can be named, and that name is a noun.

Definition Nouns- words that name people, places, animals, and things.

Definition Nouns are usually the first words that small children learn.

Know the different classes of Nouns Nouns have different classes: proper and common, concrete and abstract, count and noncount, and collective.proper commonconcreteabstractcountnoncountcollective

PROPER NOUNS

Definition of Proper Nouns  A proper noun is the name of a person, place or thing. Proper nouns should always be capitalized. Dr. Serrano

COMMON NOUNS

Definition of Common Noun A common noun is any noun that is not a proper noun. Common nouns are not capitalized.

Sample Sentences with Common Nouns  The red book is on the table.  The black dog is in my yard.  The computers are new.

CONCRETE NOUNS

Definition of Concrete Nouns  Concrete nouns are something physical.

Definition # 2 for Concrete Nouns Concrete nouns can be touched, felt, held, something visible, smell, taste, or be heard.

Example of Concrete Nouns  Common Concrete Nouns:  dog, cat, girl, plate, air, water, etc.

Sample Sentences with Concrete Nouns  Can I pet your dog?  Please pass the salt.  Your sweater is made of fine wool.

ABSTRACT NOUNS

Definition of Abstract Nouns Abstract Nouns are nouns that name other things such as ideas, actions, conditions, and qualities.

Definition #2 for Abstract Noun  Abstract noun- It cannot be touched or seen.  Abstract nouns may be either common or proper.

Example of Abstract Nouns  Feelings (such as jealousy and attraction).  Ideas (such as peace and freedom).  Qualities ( such as generosity and determination).

Sample Sentences with Abstract Nouns  They hate us for our freedom. All you need is love. We must fight the power.

COUNT NOUNS

Definition of Count Nouns  Count nouns refer to things that exist as separate and distinct individual units. They usually refer to what can be perceived by the senses.

Example of Count Nouns  table  chair  word  finger

Sample Sentences with Count Nouns  I stepped in a puddle. (How many puddles did you step in? Just one)  I drank a glass of milk. (Glasses of milk can be counted).

NONCOUNT NOUNS

Definition of Noncount Nouns  Noncount nouns refer to things that can't be counted because they are thought of as wholes that can't be cut into parts.

Definition #2 for Noncount Nouns  They often refer to abstractions and occasionally have a collective meaning (for example, furniture).

Examples of Noncount Nouns anger furniture warmth courage education

Sample Sentence with Noncount Nouns  I dove into the water.  (How many waters did you dive into? ) water is noncountable

Samples Sentences with Noncount Nouns  I saw the milk spill.  (How many milks? Milk cannot be counted.)

COLLECTIVE NOUNS

What is a collective noun? In general, collective nouns are nouns that refer to a group of something in a specific manner.

What is a Collective Noun? #2  Often, collective nouns are used to refer to groups of animals.

Sample Sentences with Collective Nouns  Look at the gaggle of geese.  There used to be herds of wild buffalo on the prairie.

Sample Sentences with Collective Nouns #2  A bevy of swans is swimming in the pond.  A colony of ants live in the anthill.

GENDERS

Nouns have four Genders Masculine gender Feminine gender Neuter gender Common gender

Masculine Gender  Masculine Gender for words representing males: boy, man, duke, son.

Feminine Gender Feminine Gender for words representing females: girl, woman, mother.

Neuter Gender  Neuter Gender for inanimate objects: table, book, umbrella, door.

Common Gender  Common Gender for either sex: student, reader, cousin, friend.
