2 What is a noun?  A noun is a word that names something: a person, place, thing, or idea.

3 Types of Nouns  Proper Noun- a proper noun names a particular person, place, thing, or idea. Proper nouns are always capitalized.  Jackie Robinson  Brooklyn  World Series

4 Common Noun  Common nouns do not name a particular person, place, thing, or idea. Common nouns are not capitalized.  baseball  woman  park  government

5 Concrete Nouns  Concrete nouns name things that are tangible- things you can see, touch, hear, taste, smell.  child  pizza  train

6 Abstract Nouns  Names an idea, condition, or feeling- something that can’t be seen, touched, tasted, smelled, or heard  greed  love  sadness

7 Collective Noun  Names a group or unit  United States  Crowd  Army  team

8 When do I capitalize nouns?  Names of specific people  Days of the week, months, holidays  Titles and ranks when used with a person’s name :Principal Matthews  Cities, states, rivers, countries, counties, oceans, streets, parks  Historical periods- World War II  Religions

9 When do I capitalize nouns?  Specific school courses, not subjects  Schools, businesses, organizations  Brand names- Chevrolet  Letters that stand alone- U-turn  Names of teams  Titles of books, chapters, and articles
