2  A noun is a word for a person, place or thing.  A simple example of a noun would be: car, house, Chris, Mr. Anderson, Mt. Rushmore and Puerto Rico.  More sophisticated nouns would be Annotation, appellation, eponym, linguistics, malapropism, neologism, parlance, patois, polyglot, vulgarity.

3  Some types of nouns include: ◦ Proper Nouns ◦ Common Nouns ◦ Collective Nouns ◦ Concrete Nouns ◦ Abstract Nouns ◦ Pronouns

4  These are nouns that refer to specific entities.  In other words they refer to names of any noun.  Examples: Nebraska, Steve, Harvard, or White House

5  Common nouns refer to general, unspecific categories of entities.  In other words they are nouns that do not refer to any person place or thing in specific. Example: State, Car, House, dog, and fan.

6  Collective nouns are nouns that refer to a group of something in a specific manner.  In other words they are the name of a group of animals, objects, or places.  Example: Herd, Bevy, colony,

7  Concrete nouns are nouns that can be touched, smelled, seen, felt, or tasted.  Examples: Betty Steak, table, dog, Maria, salt, and wool

8  Are theoretical concepts that use abstract nouns to refer to them.  In other words, they are concepts, ideas, philosophies, and other entities that cannot be concretely perceived.  Examples: Freedom, God, Love Power, or Hate.

9  Pronouns are types of nouns that take the place of nouns when referring to people, places or things.  Instead of saying the name Abigail three times in a sentence, you can use the words her, she, it.  Examples: He, She, It, I, You, or They

10  The next examples of nouns are considered to be sophisticated and we should all learn their valuable meanings.

11  An Annotation a crucial or explanatory note. An addition to information on a book, video, document, etc.  Example: The annotation on Arthur Miller’s The Crucible explained why two dogs died for no apparent reason. (ăn’ō-tā’shen)

12  A name, title or designation. An identifying word or group of words by which someone or something is called.  The appellation for Florida is the sunshine state because of the amount of sunlight it gets all year long.  (Ăp’e-lā’shen)

13  A person whose name is or is thought to be the source of the name of something. A name derived from a person.  The eponym of the town Hattiesburg was in honor of the founder’s wife Hattie.  Ĕp’e-nĭm’

14  The study of the nature, structure, and variation of language. The scientific study of a language.  Linguistics can help you find the meaning of words used in the middle ages.  Lĭng-gwĭs’tĭks

15  Ridiculous, Misuse of a word, by confusing it with one of similar sound. The unintentional misuse of a word by confusing it with another.  Steve accidentally said the love of his life “density brought me to you” instead of destiny.  Măl’e-prŏp-ĭz’em.

16  A new word, expression or usage. A word or expression that has appeared in more modern time.  The words download and upload did not exist before the internet.  Nē-ŏl’e-jĭz’em

17  A particular manner of speaking. A manner of speaking that is natural to the native speaker of a language.  In medical parlance, terminal means that you are going to die of a disease.  Pär’lens

18  A regional dialect especially an non-standard one that has no written tradition.  The patois of Puerto Ricans include speaking extremely fast and saying such words as “cangri-flow” and “pitchea”  Păt’wä’

19  A person who speaks several languages.  An example of a Polyglot is Mr. Pluguez because he can speak English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Latin, German, and Italian.  Pŏl’ē-glŏt

20  Crude, indecent, an offensive or obscene act or expression.  The vulgarity of his language got him suspended for a week.  Vŭl-’ga-re-tē/

21  Now that we have learned what is a noun, the types of nouns, and some fancy and sophisticated nouns lets review.

22  On a piece of paper, write all the different types of nouns.

23  After writing all the types of nouns, define what they are and give examples.

A humorous confusion of words. 7. a name or title 8. a new word 9. knowing several languages 10. the study of language. Write the correct word on a piece of paper. (be sure to number them CORRECTLY)
