School of Modern Languages Dr Sandra Salin – Dr Damien Hall - Morgane Mazan - Better French Living through the Internet and Linguistics

Aims to collaborate with Stage 2, 3 and 4 French language students to develop specifically designed online resources to help NU students prepare for the time they will spend in a francophone country as part of their studies to narrow the gap between (research-based) Content modules and (language-learning-based) Language modules to integrate linguistics content into French Language learning and teaching

Better preparation for living in a francophone country Who goes abroad? How are they prepared? Students’ feedback Preliminary survey among Stage 4 students (returning from their Year Abroad) everyday situations – Practical informal conversations – Oral Independent learning – online resources Existing online resources

Better integration of Linguistics into language learning Why? Understanding the structures behind sounds and sentences will help students have better accents and better grammar For example Many English-speakers have difficulty distinguishing French /u/ and /y/, which could lead to telling a lecturer they have a beautiful behind Demonstrations of how to form these sounds and how they differ Demonstrations of the grammar of French questions Targeted exercises Integration of one linguistic point per real-life situation unit Many English-speakers find it difficult to form questions correctly in French How? (‘beau cul’)

Project phase 1 - Consultation Surveys currently going on: Focus groups (SML Stage 4 students) s to SML Stage 3 students with experience in a French- speaking country Cultural differences / clichés Supermarket and daily life Healthcare Education systems Opening a bank account Difficulties identified so far: Phone conversations Slang / daily vocabulary and conversations Accents Correspondence CVs and covering letters Second step: consult non-SML students with experience in a French-speaking country

The future of the project Summer 2014 Material development (including listening activities focussing on spoken and colloquial French, cultural differences, etiquette, practical situations, accents and intonation) Parts of the material will be produced in-house All recordings used will be transcribed and answer sheets (or recordings) produced. Semester Material made available to Stage 2 students via Blackboard. Amendments after feedback. Semester Tested material made available to NU students via Language Resource Centre.

Long-term objective to provide up-to-date, culturally relevant material to offer students the opportunity to practice their skills with targeted sources on a regular basis to encourage students to practice regularly and formatively Please contact us and send your suggestions if you have students going to a francophone country! Thank you!
