RDM training initiatives at the University of Melbourne 4 December, 2014 Anna Shadbolt Digital Scholarship Library Research Program

Session Overview The Immersive Informatics Training Pilot (IITP) – structure, review and evaluation Pre-immersion training for Library Liaison staff MANTRA online training pilot

Immersive Informatics Training Program Explores theoretic content, discussion and activities in Research Data Management in connection with a real- world data context Integration of immersion (practicum) with theoretic and teaching components Pilot run at University of Melbourne to test the feasibility of the concept initially conceived by UKOLN and amended by Melbourne to suit local requirements Curriculum developed collaboratively across both sites and is released under cc licence

Thematic structure as we delivered it

Typical module structure

Participant demographics 14 participants registered 12 participants completed the program (8 working in various roles within the Library; 1 Faculty based RDM support; 3 Researchers); Participants identified their role(s) as: –Librarian (2); –Research Assistant/Librarian (1); –Research Archivist (2); –Research Training Librarian (1); –Archivist (2); –Research Database Manager (1); –Research Fellow (3). NB: The two participants who withdrew had time clashes with scheduled training days or work overload.

Immersive placements Faculty of Business and Economics (2) –Research data of Professor in Accounting –Research data of Professor in Management Bio 21 Institute – Neuroimaging (1) –Research data of Professor in neuroimaging MDHS – Centre for MEGA Epidemiology (1) –High Profile National Longitudinal study University Archives (2) –University Archivist – Saulwick Polls Archive Faculty of Arts (1) –Research data of Professor History MDHS - Psychiatry – Melbourne Neuropsychiatry Centre (1) –Research data of PhD project Faculty of the VCA-MCM – School of Performing Arts (1) –Dance School Records and Archive Property and Campus Services (2) –Grounds Project Design – PCS Photographic Collection

Overall course relevance reported by participants Perceived relevance to RDM needs at week 5 Perceived relevance to RDM needs at week 16 Not sure Yes 75% relevant 100% 50%

Program Evaluation Changing nature of responses between evaluation stages Issues of structure: –Time commitment –Perceived value deriving from Certification “… it felt more like an accredited course than training.” –Theory versus practical knowledge Content and structure of activities: –Emphasis on problem-based learning –Case study evolving throughout the training course –More group work, less individual learning

Subjective Observations & Reflections Level of previous knowledge: –Cannot start with data novices –In Australian context, most librarians are data novices Program best suited to researchers: –Demonstrated most evidence of ability to implement learning to their data context Need for vested interest in Research Data Management to sustain motivation

Subjective Observations & Reflections Impact –At the conclusive phase of pilot: Change potential within immersive research environment Heightened awareness of research data management issues in immersive research environment –Post-pilot: Participants spreading the word upon return to work environment (sharing experience & learning with colleagues, flagging gaps, raising awareness, identifying opportunities) Participants engaging Research Data Management experts at University Library in training events and workshops

More information about the Immersive Informatics pilot training program OA Publication – reporting about the program pedagogy and the evaluation. Training materials (CC licence) – Program documents, evaluation details; Module overviews, presentations, activities and resources All resources are now available on the Minerva – the University of Melbourne Repository: access.unimelb.edu.au/handle/11343/40985https://minerva- access.unimelb.edu.au/handle/11343/40985

Post IITP For IITP Graduates: Ongoing engagement with the group to build a diverse Community of Practice in RDM –A seminar program for IITP participants established. –Key informants for feedback on various RDM developments, e.g. review of online training materials; For Researchers: Plan to review IITP modules for Faculty based adaptation and delivery to researchers Pilot of Melbourne_MANTRA – an ‘Australianisation’ of the UK MANTRA online RDM training modules – pilot with RHDs For Library staff: Pre-immersion Training for Discipline based liaison teams Building RDM planning into liaison roles

Pre-Immersion Training Module One – Research Data Management Planning –Emphasis on research data management planning and the use of research data management plans –Build understanding through class implementation and personal practice post-workshop –Reflective activity –Discipline team group activities – GROUP ACTION PLANNING Identify a gap or problem e.g. RHD students lack awareness of RDM policy requirements. Propose actions to solve problem Set targets and measure impact

Module One participation – initial learnings Participants in first delivery (June/July) were staff based in discipline libraries (DL, LL, Client services) –38 registrations; 33 attended workshop; 20 completed post-workshop tasks –All libraries were represented by at least one participant Initial analysis is attempting to identify (23 participants completed some of the evaluation survey): –interest and relevance of the RDMP content to participants –Level of comfort in delivery of RDMP content to different client groups

Modularised RDM program for Library staff builds on IITP Discipline Library teams: Module 1 – this will be delivered again in 2015 following more detailed analysis of the impact of the training Module 2 – Managing and Organising Information Module 3 – RDM Infrastructure and Services Module 4 – Data curation and preservation planning –Part 1 – Theoretical –Part 2 – Immersion Explore other Library teams who may be interested in completing all or some of the above modules.

Melbourne_MANTRA Working with an existing well regarded training program that has been evaluated and reviewed broadly: Phase One: PILOT –Light touch editing of content to include local content and remove UK-centric information not relevant to Australian context –Not evaluating current platform –Local videos will be developed if we move to Phase 2 Implementation in UoM learning platform –RHD Students will evaluate content from their perspective November-December 2014 –Phase 1 report February 2015 –Deposit of UoM content under CC licence into Jorum repository as Melbourne_MANTRA

Pilot underway – initial data 140+ Graduate researchers (PhD and Masters by research) have registered to participate in the pilot Mod 1 (34); 2 (21); 3 (15); 4 (10); 5 (10); 6 (10); 7 (10); 8 (9) Two Faculties – no engagement to date –Law –Business and Economics Difficult time of year for some students who may be drawing close to the end of their studies. May extend into January 2015 depending on final numbers

MANTRA – online training program Phase Two – subject to outcome of Phase One & funding –Improvements in delivery platform to UoM infrastructure –Local video content from UoM – though many of the participants have reported that the UK videos were very informative –Test with a broader audience: All researchers Research administrators Library staff
