FAIR TRADE MASNACH DEG What it is, why it’s important and how you can get more involved….

What is Fair Trade? The Fairtrade mark guarantees: 1. Farmers receive a fair and stable price for their products 2. Producers receive a premium to invest in improving their communities and businesses 3. Decent working conditions. No bonded child labour 4. Greater respect for the environment 5. Small farmers have a stronger position in world markets

What you can do... Fairtrade towns Fairtrade schools Fairtrade universities/ colleges Fairtrade faith groups Fairtrade workplaces

The aim of a Fairtrade town is to get Fair Trade used, understood and promoted in the local community. It is a group project where people from the community work together to promote positive change, home and abroad.

Becoming a Fairtrade town 1. The local council must pass a resolution supporting Fairtrade, and serve Fairtrade coffee and tea at its meetings and in offices and canteens. 2. A range of Fairtrade products must be readily available in the area’s shops and served in local cafés and catering establishments (targets are set in relation to population) 3. Fairtrade products must be used by a number of local work places (estate agents, hairdressers etc) and community organisations (churches, schools etc) 4. Attract media coverage and popular support for the campaign 5. A local Fairtrade steering group must be convened to ensure continued commitment to Fairtrade Town status.

On Friday 6 th June 2008, Wales became the first ever Fair Trade country!

This means… Fair Trade is used, promoted and understood across communities, councils, businesses and government in Wales - All counties across Wales have an active Fairtrade campaigns -55% of towns have active Fairtrade campaigns -60% of FE & HE institutions have active Fairtrade groups -75% of people recognise the Fairtrade mark -Over 600 schools have signed up to become Fairtrade schools

But there’s so much more to do…
