Angle Grinders

Objectives List uses of angle grinders on a quiz with 80% accuracy. Identify the parts of an angle grinder on a handout with 100% accuracy. List the safety rules for angle grinders on a test with 100% accuracy.

Reasons To Learn Why do we need to know how to use angle grinders? Why is safety important when using an angle grinder?

Questions To Answer What can angle grinders be used for? What are some of the safety concerns when using an angle grinder? What are the parts of an angle grinder?

Angle Grinder Parts Vent Chord Locking power switch Spindle lock button Wheel Guard Body Grinding/Cutting Wheel Auxiliary Handle Lock Nut

Things to Know Angle grinders range from 3000-12,000 rpms Disk sizes range from 4-9 inches Can be fitted with sanding disks or wire wheels Angle grinders are not the same as polishers and if used to polish they will burn paint

Safety Wear safety glasses and a face shield when operating. Always carry the grinder by the body never by the chord. Keep work area clean and free of debris. Make sure there are no flammable materials in the work area. Always check the wheel for cracks or malformation. Use the correct wheel for the job.

Safety Cont. Make sure the wheel is rated for the speed of your grinder. Where appropriate clothing: long sleeve shirt, pants without frays, and gloves. Make sure clothes are not to loose Use both hands while grinding or cutting. Do not operate in wet areas Be aware of the people around you and the direction of the discharge of metal Do not touch metal after being worked on

Proper Use Go through the safety list When grinding use a 15 to 30 degree angle Make sure you have a strong grip on the grinder Let the grinder do the work (do not press to hard) Do not get in a hurry Slow down toward the end of grinding Set the grinder on its back when done after the wheel has stopped

Summary What can angle grinders be used for? What are the parts of an angle grinder? What are the sizes of angle grinders? What are the safety precautions we need to take when using an angle grinder?
