Nouns: Common and Proper

What’s a Noun? A person, place, thing, or idea.

Person What people can we think of? -Martin Luther King, Jr. -Jennifer Lopez -Mr. Williamson -policeman -woman -chimneysweep

Place What places can we think of? -Grand Canyon -Independence High School -house -museum -room

Thing Let’s name some things: -chair -desk -lamp -doo-rag

Idea Name some ideas, in noun form: -democracy -love -hate -thought

Things that Aren’t Nouns I, you, he, she, it, we, ya’ll, they Words like these are pronouns. We’ll get to those later. To see a complete list of pronouns, go here:

Common Noun (CN) A common noun is a noun that is not normally capitalized (exceptions can be if the word is at the beginning of a sentence or begins a piece of dialogue that begins in the middle of a sentence). They are usually less specific than proper nouns. What are some common nouns? -tree -apple -turkey -robber

Proper Noun (PN) Nouns that are capitalized, such as names, countries, book titles, months…can you think of others? -times of year (Fall, Spring, etc.) -Specific building names -rand names (including sports teams and cars) -city names -War names (WWII) and specific battles in wars (Battle of the Bulge) -There are more. List Some PN’s Let’s list a few PN’s: -Applebee’s -Michael Jordan -Yellowstone National Park -Thanksgiving

Where are they and what kind? Please underline all nouns, and put CN or PN above them. Example: cn pn The police are coming to find Johnny.
