Things to Remember! Update your Table of Contents. -Date: 2/25/13 -Title of Assignment: Managing Your Weight -Standard: 5.3.N Contrast healthy and risky approaches to weight management. -Page #: Vocabulary Index (Include page #): Words to be included today are body image, Body Mass Index, eating disorder, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating. DO NOT copy what is in RED bold, only BLACK!! Anything in GREEN is a question for you to answer only.

Managing Your Weight(CN) Body Image Body Mass Index (BMI) Eating Disorders Is the way you see your body Is a method for assessing your body size by taking your height and weight. Are extreme eating behaviors that can lead to serious illness or even death.

Cont. Anorexia nervosa Bulimia nervosa Binge Eating Is an eating disorder in which a person strongly fears gaining weight and starves herself or himself. Is an eating disorder in which a person repeatedly eats large amounts of food and then purges. Is a disorder in which a person repeatedly eats too much food at one time.

Body Image The attitudes of family and friends, as well as images from the media, affect how people see themselves. “Am I too thin?” “Do I need to loose weight?” “Do I need more muscles?”

How to Develop a Positive Body Image The key to having a positive body image is to accept yourself and your body. Keep in mind, also, that very few people look like the people you see on television, in the movies, or in magazines. Don’t compare yourself with these people.

Benefits of a Healthy Weight Your body composition is the fat, bone, muscle, and fluid that make up your body weight. Generally, a healthy body has more bone, muscle, and fluid than fat. To keep your weight and body composition within a health range, choose healthy foods, control the amount of food you eat, and stay physically active to help you burn off some of the calories you take in.

Cont. Being overweight increases the risk of high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer later in life, but also in the teen years. Being significantly underweight is also unhealthy.

BMI (Body Mass Index) Formula: weight (lb) / [height (in)] 2 x 703 Calculate BMI by dividing weight in pounds (lbs) by height in inches (in) squared and multiplying by a conversion factor of 703. Example: Weight = 150 lbs, Height = 5'5" (65") Calculation: [150 ÷ (65) 2 ] x 703 = 24.96

Exit Slip Write a short paragraph explaining how can you maintain a healthy weight and why is it important?
