HOW TO USE A CONDOM CORRECTLY

STEP 1 GET LATEX CONDOM FROM CLINIC, STORE, OR OTHER PLACE It is important to plan ahead and get condoms AHEAD OF TIME The best option is not to have sex. But if a young person does have sex, he or she must be prepared to reduce their risks. LATEX condoms is the best to reduce the risk of HIV (“Skin” or “Lambskin” condoms are not effective against HIV and other STDs).

Step 2: Check the package expiration date This is important to be sure that the condom is still good. Condoms can decay sooner than the expiration date if they are subjected to heat (e.g., in the glove compartment of a car in the summertime).

Step 3 Male gets an erection (hard on) Getting an erection needs to go after step 2 (so that when a male is ready to have sex, he has a condom that is not expired). It also needs to occur before putting on the condom—and probably before opening the package.

Step 4 Open the package, careful not to tear the condom Opening the package with teeth or scissors can tear or cut the condom. Also, rings can puncture a condom.

Step 5 Check that the condom is right-side-out and will roll down. A common mistake is to start putting the condom on wrong- side-out. If this happens, the male’s body fluids can get on the condom, and then expose the partner when the condom is turned over to be put on right-side-out. To prevent this from happening, it is important to check that the condom is right-side-out before it touches the penis. This can be done by rolling it down just a little over the thumbs.

Step 6 With one hand, pinch the tip of the condom to make space for semen. This step is important to squeeze out the air and make room for the male’s ejaculate. If it is not done, there may be a higher chance that the condom might break.

Step 7 Put the condom on the tip of the erect penis. This step is the first part of the condom actually going onto the penis. Note that the condom is still rolled up.

Step 8 Unroll the condom to the base of the penis. Note that the condom needs to be unrolled all the way to the base of the penis, near the hair. This will reduce the chance that the condom will slip off the penis.

Step 9 If lubricants are used, use ONLY water-based ones. [This step can go in several places.] Lubricants can be put on the partner, on the outside of the condom to make it more slippery. A drop of lubricant can also be used on the inside of the condom, before it is put on the penis. Lubricants used properly can help reduce the chance a condom will break. Use ONLY water-based lubricants like Astroglide, Aqua Lube, or KY Jelly. Oil-based lubricants, like baby oil or Vaseline will cause condoms to break!

Step 10 Penis touches the partner: It is extremely important that the penis not touch the partner’s genital area (or mouth or anal area) until AFTER the condom is on. A common mistake is to start to have sex, and then put the condom on later, when the male is ready to ejaculate.

Step 11 Male ejaculates (comes): It is essential that the condom stay on the penis until after ejaculation. This is included to assist in placing the steps in order. If ejaculation does not occur, Steps 8 to 10 can be performed after all contact of the penis with the partner.

Step 12: Hold the condom to the base of the penis, and pull out of partner while the penis is still hard. In order to prevent the condom from falling off the penis, the penis should be withdrawn while it is still erect, and the male should hold onto the condom at the base of the penis. This step is important to prevent slippage of the condom, which could let semen touch the partner.
