Condom  Condoms are sheaths of thin latex or plastic worn on the penis during intercourse.  Condoms collect semen before, during, and after a man ejaculates ("comes"). This can keep sperm from entering the vagina. The female condom is a reversible barrier method of birth control. It is a polyurethane (plastic) pouch with flexible rings at each end. It is inserted deep into the vagina like a diaphragm. The ring at the closed end holds the pouch in the vagina. The ring at the open end stays outside

Condom Do’s & Don’ts Do store condoms in a cool, dry place. Don’t leave your condoms in the sun- sunlight breaks down the latex. Don’t leave your condoms in a wallet or glove compartment-heat breaks down latex, too. Do check the expiration date on the condom package. Don’t use a condom that has expired, or is brittle or sticky. Do open a condom package gently. Don’t open the condom package with your teeth. Do use plenty of water-based lubricants. Don’t use oil-based lubricants like baby oil, massage oil, lotion or Vaseline-oil breaks down latex.

Diaphragm  The diaphragm is a shallow, dome shaped cup with a flexible rim. It fits securely in the vagina to cover the cervix.  Protection may be increased by:  making sure the cervix is covered before each act of intercourse  making sure spermicide is used as recommended  using a latex condom

The Sponge  The sponge is made of plastic foam and contains spermicide. It is soft, round, and about two inches in diameter. It has a nylon loop attached to the bottom for removal. It is inserted deep into the vagina before intercourse.

Spermicide is a non-prescription barrier method of reversible birth control.  Contraceptive foams block the entrance to the uterus with bubbles and contain a spermicide that immobilizes sperm.

The pill" is the common name for oral contraception.  Combination pills usually work by preventing a woman's ovaries from releasing eggs (ovulation). They also thicken the cervical mucus, which keeps sperm from joining with an egg.  The hormones in combination and progestin-only pills also thin the lining of the uterus. In theory, this could prevent pregnancy by interfering with implantation of a fertilized egg.

The patch — Ortho Evra —  Is a reversible prescription method of birth control. It is a thin, beige, plastic patch that sticks to the skin.  How it works? It is the same as the pill

The Ring — NuvaRing  It is a small, flexible ring that is inserted into the vagina once a month. It is left in place for three weeks and taken out for the remaining week. The ring releases synthetic estrogen and progestin to protect against pregnancy for one month.

Birth Control Shot (Depo-Provera)  The birth control shot is an injection of a hormone that prevents pregnancy. Each shot prevents pregnancy for three months.  The progestin in the shot works by keeping a woman’s ovaries from releasing eggs  The progestin in the shot also prevents pregnancy by thickening a woman’s cervical mucus. The mucus blocks sperm and keeps it from joining with an egg.

IUD  An Intrauterine Device (IUD) is a small object that is inserted through the cervix and placed in the uterus to prevent pregnancy. A small string hangs down from the IUD into the upper part of the vagina. The IUD is not noticeable during intercourse. IUDs can last 1-10 years. They work by changing the the the lining of the uterus and fallopian tubes affecting the movements of eggs and sperm and so that fertilization does not occur. IUDs are 99.2- 99.9% effective as birth control. They do not protect against sexually transmitted infections, including HIV/AIDS

Withdrawal  The man will pull his penis out of the vagina before he ejaculates to keep sperm from joining the egg.  Disadvantages Requires great self-control Requires great self-control Not recommended for teens Not recommended for teens Premature ejaculationPremature ejaculation

Emergency Contraception   Are hormone pills that women can take after having sex.   Most effective when it is taken as soon as possible after intercourse, although it can still reduce the risk of pregnancy when taken up to 120 hours after intercourse.   Work by delaying ovulation (the release of an egg during a girl's monthly cycle). If fertilization and implantation have already happened, levonorgestrel won't interrupt the pregnancy.
