Capri 1878 John Singer Sargent Stephanie Mattingly

Capri 1878 Artist: John singer Sargent Time: 1878 Place: Capri, Italy This painting is one of 75 that Sargent did over several trips to Italy. Sargent was born to American parents but spent most of his early years in Europe. Italy was a country that was very special to him which is why he continued to return and paint there. Many of his pictures that where painted in Capri have names that are not just named after the place and the year like this one. This makes it seem that the painting described the totality of Capri for Sargent. It brings more meaning to the painting.

Ethos –Does this picture show ethos?

Ethos I think that this painting does show ethos because of the simplicity of the painting. We see a very simple scene with two people dancing in it, it is a simple and realistic which gives the author credibility. It looks like something that actually happened.

Pathos What type of emotions does this painting portray?

Pathos I think that Capri is a painting that portrays happy, and carefree emotions. These two people are standing on a roof playing music and dancing. It gives the feeling of being free flowing with expression and have no cares in the world.
