1-3 Dividing Decimals Pages 19 & 20

How to convert $ values?  Let’s look at a true example to help us realize how important it is to know long division without a calculator!  Miss Le and her friends did not have a calculator along on her trip.

This is what happened to Miss Le this August:  She went shopping in Antigua, Guatemala.  In Guatemala, they use Quetzales as their currency.  The conversion was about 7.65 Quetzales to each US dollar Q = $ Q = $1

Miss Le bought the following items (after she bartered): 1.Purse that was 120 Quetzals. About how much money was this in U.S. dollars? 2. A hand carved knife was 85Q. About how much money was this in U.S. dollars?

Vocabulary  Dividend:  Divisor:  Quotient:

Vocabulary  Dividend: The number being divided  Divisor:  Quotient:

Vocabulary  Dividend: The number being divided  Divisor: The number of groups ~ what we are dividing by  Quotient:

Vocabulary  Dividend: The number being divided  Divisor: The number of groups ~ what we are dividing by  Quotient: The answer to a division problem

Ways to see the vocabulary in action:

Steps: 1.Move the decimal from the divisor to the right until it is all the way to the end of the number. 2.Move the decimal in the dividend the SAME amount of places to the right. 3.Write the decimal on top of the “house” where you ended in the problem. 4.Divide, add Zeroes (if needed). We do not have remainders now. 5.Check to make sure decimal is in the correct location in your answer.

Example 1: Set up the problem in the “house:

Next, move the decimal (in the divisor and the dividend). Move the decimal one place to the right in each location.

Write the decimal on top of the house so that it is in the correct place for your answer.

Do the division to find your answer The correct answer is: 10.6

Example 2:
